Oh, this is rich. Anti-gay GOP Senator Roy Ashburn, Republican father of four and grandfather of two, was arrested last night for driving while blotto. Ashburn, according to reports, had just visited Faces, a Sacramento gay bar. (Titter.) A male passenger in the car with Miss Ashburn was not detained, but the Senator was booked into the Sacramento County Jail and released on $1,400 bond.

Representing parts of Kern, Tulare and San Bernardino Counties, and having a dark history of opposing gay rights, Ashburn released the following statement:

I am deeply sorry for my actions and offer no excuse for my poor judgment. I accept complete responsibility for my conduct and am prepared to accept the consequences for what I did. I am also truly sorry for the impact this incident will have on those who support and trust me - my family, my constituents, my friends, and my colleagues in the Senate

His anti-gay record, according to JoeMyGod, includes voting against a Senate resolution declaring Prop 8 unconstitutional, three times shooting down the creation of Harvey Milk Day, voting against recognizing out of state same-sex marriages, and opposing "an expansion of the state's insurance laws to include sexual orientation as a protected class."

Vile. And sad.
