Bus stop consolidation is going on as we speak on the 21 Hayes line, where, arguably, there are more stops than are really necessary. Muni has apparently been reluctant to delve into the topic of consolidating stops to reduce wait time, reduce costs, and increase efficiency of bus lines because there are, of course, always going to be people ready to fight to keep their favorite bus stop exactly where it is.
But it is happening, and here is a picture. Maybe now you will be able to get from downtown to the Western Addition in less than a half hour. [Hat tip: SF Citizen]

They did it to the 18 line, and the changes won't happen for another 15 days.

Removing stops on the 21 west of Laguna Street will do little speed things up.
Most of the intersections are four-way stops. Buses tend to get held up at traffic lights and behind traffic turning left. Hayes is a relatively quiet street beyond Hayes Valley.
What this will do is add more parking spaces in former bus stops.
It will also make things more difficult for elderly passengers with mobility issues. That extra block to walk to a different stop can make a big difference for some of our neighbors.
As the route is being trimmed (it no longer will go all the way to 6th Avenue), I suspect MUNI’s real agenda is to kill the line altogether. Which is sad, as many of us use it as an alternative to the Haight Street buses.
Four way stops are A LOT faster than dwell time.
Any word on which stops are being eliminated? The listed changes only mention shortening the route to end at Stanyan instead of 6th ave.
This is just terrific. Maybe they could ADD (imagine that) a bus or two during the morning commute so that I can get a ride from Hayes Valley to downtown.
I don't even bother with the bus in the morning because they are overflowing with people 95% of the time (unless there are two buses in a row which isn't supposed to happen). I walk to the Van Ness underground and wait there for a car that has room in it.
Make sure you show your pass though. Gotta make sure you pay for the right to be stuffed into public transportation in the greenest socialist city (that smells an awful lot like capitalist) in the US of A-hole.
Sad to say, but after taking MUNI to work for almost precisely 30 years, I believe the upcoming route changes are going to make me a car commuter. My job can provide with a cut rate parking space and I have paid my MUNI karma dues. The goal of the route redesign obviously is to make every bus as crowded as a 30 Stockton all of ther time and I believe that is one goal MUNI can accomplish. Bye Bye MUNI, hello Prius.
I have my own criticisms about Muni's changes. It doesn't make a lot of sense to do a major re-route for the 18-46th Avenue that currently serves Geary and Pt. Lobos (including the Cliff House) and instead re-route it to the upcoming defunct 38-Geary Ocean Beach branch.
Why couldn't they just kill-off the 38-Geary Fort Miley branch? The 38L gets them to 42nd Avenue, and it's just a short walk or maybe a shuttle van doing the little segment to the hospital.
Please remove the stop at Hayes and Divis. As useful as this stop is for many, this would greatly reduce the volume of Popeye's wrappers and chicken bones littering the bus and would improve the MUNI experience for all!!!
The Popeye garbage manages to make an appearance on Grove/Laguna quite regularly. I'd much prefer if Popeye's was burned to the ground.
My dog on the other hand would not be happy since she looks forward to the bus shelter filth/garbage that collects from the classy clientele at PoopEyes.
That would just give those kids who hang out at the coffee shop for cheap beer even more room to spread out all over the place.
Anyone know why there are those two bus stops on the same block of Van Ness by City Hall? I always wonder about that when Muni starts consolidating stops. It seems like such a blatant privilege for our bureaucratic overlords that work down there. There must be some official justification for it.
That's far from the only place where there's two stops on the same block.
It seems that the stop on Grove, right before it makes the right onto Polk, was added fairly recently, presumably to service those that need to access the Dept. of Public Health and then there is a stop about 30 yards farther down Polk. Certainly one of those two could be removed.
There is a stop at Hayes and Scott which is on the same block as the stop at Hayes and Divis. I've always thought it would be a prime candidate for removal, but as of 5:30pm, it remains.
Please remove half the stops on routes that travel through the Tenderloin.
Thank you Jesus!! I've been complaining about the ridiculous number of stops on the 21 line forever.
Finally MUNI does something right! :-)
