Verizon Droid: Big Deal? Or Just Another Late Arrival Rival?

verizon-droid.png According to this woman, who was in line at 3 a.m. this morning at a Verizon store in order to be the very first owner of a Motorola Droid phone in SF, this is "the phone [she's] been waiting for."

What do you think, dear readers? Certainly Apple deserves a worthy rival, but has the iPhone just been around too long and the market for apps just become such a monolothic thing to overcome that no competitor stands a chance for a while? Or do the iPhone and AT&T's exclusive service still have enough snafus to open the market to competitors?

Despite the fact that it seems some days like half or three-quarters of this town owns an iPhone, we heard a figure last night that some 90% or more of the market still does not own a "smart phone" and the remains wide open. So let us know in the poll below. From what you've seen and heard, should Apple be worried?

The 5 megapixel camera has been the Holy Grail smart phone feature for me all along. It's not really a camera if it can't take 5 megapixel photos.

Has anyone used one yet? Assessment?

the camera on the (Droid) is teh suxxor.

i own an iphone. i love it. but i'm glad that android phones are stepping up b/c it makes everyone's phone better. The reviews all say that this is good phone.

plus maybe all the kids will buy it, and i will once again be able to get 3g service in dolores park.

(btw, brock your headline makes you sound like an old)

is teh suxxor a good or bad assessment?

I am an old.

lol. Camera phones will always suck because their lenses suck, not because their sensors don't have enough resolving power. I used an old 1 megapixel Sony camera for a while, and that took far better pictures than any cameraphone I've ever seen.

I have a 1st generation Android and I've never had a problem with it. I like it because it's fancy but nondescript - I don't worry that someone will smack it out of my hand and run away with it if I'm using it in public. (I never fiddle with my iPod in public due to this paranoia).

That bird that was in line at 3 a.m. is dumb.

got a droid today, so far I like it a lot.
oh, and thats not a picture of it up there.

Right you are! Thx. Photo swapped. Goes to show how much we're personally invested in this thing.

"This is the phone we've been waiting for" is right because Verizon's smart phone offerings have always lagged the competition. Their data plan is more expensive than AT&T+iPhone - $50/mo and they cap you at 5GB. Coverage out in the sticks is better though.

I got the G1 early this year and love it. Looking to stick with Android for some time.

Same here. A few hiccups but I generally love it.

are we allowed to get a lil nerdy here (/cue "White & Nerdy" pleas)?

That pic is still wacky, the keyboard slides out of the side, not the bottom. See the Android Community review.

I hate the "iPhone killer" hype, it's so pointless. Android has been around about as long as iPhone anyway but in the context of Android this particular phone is not a late arrival as it's the first running v2.0. I'll most likely get Droid unless the Verizon plans turn out to be too expensive compared to my unlimited-everything plan on T-Mo. Which they probably will. Bah.

That's still not the picture of the Droid. That's just a mashup of Droid and Blackberry Tour.

That's not the droid you're looking for.

It's actually kind of amazing very happy with this device. The only issue I have with it is the protective cover which causes friction when sliding the phone and it's a lot of friction but this is just cosmetic anyways.

I got it on Friday and it's amazing! Seriously. I'm new to the whole "smartphone" thing but it's super fast, the data plan is only $30/month and everything is really easy to figure out. Downside: I can now be reached by e-mail at all hours of the night. Eventually this is going to drive me crazy and I'll have to unplug from the internet world for a little while..

I've had mine since Friday and I have to say that it is an absolutely amazing phone. Fast phone and screaming fast downloads. Tons of free apps. The only knock is the slide out keyboard. It is just so-so. It has all the upside of a iPhone without having to deal with ATT.

Smartphones are nice and all, but I like regular cellphones. When the screen cracks on an iPhone or other touchscreen phone you're screwed if you want to use it, with a keypad phone you can still use it.

Plus the fact all smartphones are energy hogs and with 3G the battery use goes up even more.
With a regular cellphone I don't have to worry about it's battery life unless I haven't charged it in a week or so. Plus most apps on the iPhone I'd foresee myself actually using already have free java equivalents and I can run anything I want including emulators, not limited to what I can and can't put on my phone.

And the big thing is: drop your iPhone onto concrete accidentally, your lucky if it still works. If it does it's exterior is probably noticeably scarred. Not the same with most regular cellphones.
