A seventh arrest was made in the gang rape of a Richmond High School girl. A total of 10 men, police allege, beat and raped the girl outside her homecoming dance. Held on a $1.2 million arrest warrant, the unidentified 21-year-old allegedly played a significant role in the brutal attack.
In related news, one of the suspects being charged as an adult, Marcelles James Peter, 17, is black. Why is this important? Because his relatives claim he's being singled out unfairly because of his race. SF Chronicle reports:
Peter's family accused prosecutors of having racial motives. Peter is the only black suspect named in the case. Smith is white, and the other suspects are Latino.Peter "didn't have anything to do with this," his aunt said. "He said everyone was just walking past, and he just kept moving when he saw something was going on.
"He's a good kid with no criminal record who likes to play soccer," she said. "I am going to prove his innocence.
"My nephew is scared," she added. "He is the one they've arrested who is black, and if they give my nephew a life sentence, I will sue Richmond. There is no way in hell I will see my nephew blamed in this because he is black."
No words for the victim, eh? Nice.
Also, Cody Ray Smith of San Pablo, 15, one of the youngest suspects, has a budding fanbase of confused teenagers. Vanessa Martinez (AKA ;;;;;VANE$$A;;;;), who must have been repeatedly dropped on her head as a child, writes the following regarding the gang rape, "Fuck the system fuck the snitchz.free cody fast..."
In related news, neither members of the school board nor faculty (like Richmond High School principal Julio Franco or any of the assistant principals) have resigned or been asked to resign over the jarring two-and-a-half-hour attack that happened on their watches.

Not sure about Marcelles' aunt's reasoning here. She is upset because he is the only black person arrested for the crime? Does she feel that, for it to really be a crime, there needs to be multiple black people arrested? Or that, for every crime, police always arrest at least one black person to give it some legitimacy?
Is it possible that he was the only black person arrested because he was the only black person who committed the crime? Or at least the only black person arrested so far? At least Marcelles aint' no snitch.
I know I'm a middle class white woman, and there may be real and good reasons why my reasoning doesn't apply here, but I don't get how a "good boy" walks by the scene of an ongoing gang rape and "just [keeps] moving when he saw something was going on."
The anti-snitch issue is so frustrating. I understand fear of retaliation, but how can those keeping silent have so little sympathy for victims of violent crime? I know there're crooked cops (who ought to be dealt with), but how can you not even make an anonymous 911 call?

Honestly though, I would buy the notion that he was the "kid-trying-to-fit-in" and went along with what other people did because he dearly wants to belong. If the defense attorney is smart he'll press that angle.
I feel bad for his gf. If she gets presented with incontrovertible evidence that he did it I wonder if she'll actually believe.

God speed to whomever in the Richmond police department who is going through all the cell phones, phone records, and computers of the kid thugs.
Most people know that when you delete a file from your computer it’s not really gone. It can still be retrieved by someone who knows what they are doing. I know that in criminal cases the phone companies can retrieve any text message a suspect has sent. I hope that’s also the case for any pictures that might have been emailed.
and if these people sent images to anybody else, there could be a world of hurt in the richmond area indeed.
they should just subpoena every kids text message at the school dance from the time of the beginning to the end of the incident. that should give them enough evidence to round up all the missing suspects and nobody can get blamed for snitching.
As strange as it may sound, the safest place for ALL the kids involved in this is in jail. There may be a group of teenage miscreants from Richmond who see this as no big deal, but judging from the national outcry, there is a nation full of people who see it as a very, very big deal. I don't condone violence for violence, but I predict it will happen, and happen soon. They need to get them all in jail fast to protect them.
As a horrible aside, I believe that my beautiful daughter may have worn the same dress that the victim wore to her own homecoming dance on the same night: a sparkly purple dress with faux diamonds from a well-known store. My daughter goes to a wonderful, safe school and the sun will probably burn out before anything like this ever happens there. To think of my daughter looking so lovely in her dress and having such a great time at her dance and then thinking of the fate of this poor young girl that same night just breaks my heart.
