A Toll To Cross the Golden Gate On Foot Or Bicycle?

golden_gate_bridge-eve.jpg In addition to raising the car toll another $1 come 2013, the board of directors of the Golden Gate Bridge Highway and Transportation District is considering charging bicyclists and pedestrians to cross the bridge following the completion of seismic upgrades to the pedestrian walkways. The board meets today to review these proposals, which are meant to close a projected $132 million deficit over the next five years.

While this proposal seems kind of crazy to us given the oddity of paying to walk across something, we suppose it's just another way to bilk the tourists -- and it sure isn't as batshit insane as this proposal by the Committee for Pedestrian Tolls in New York City, which suggests installing toll booths on sidewalks to enter the area between 14th and 59th Streets because, and we quote, pedestrians "cause every bit as much damage to our infrastructure as drivers." Ha!

How about just raising the tolls to $20 per crossing and be done with it. None of this "$1 this year, $1 next year" nonsense.

People will freak out about this so much that when they drop the idea and pass "just an increase on cars" it will seem OK.

They do that every year.

what if you plan to jump off and end it all, do you get a 1/2 price discount?

No, but if you survive, you can ask for a refund.

they brought this up a few years ago. it's still retarded.

they're just telegraphing financial mismanagement. "hey, we're wasting money, so we're gonna need to figure out a way to get more in the future. if you don't let us rape everybody, the cars get it."

Charge all those tourist who want to go to LOOK OUT point in MARIN a $5 fee , for they cause some of the bad traffic on the bridge and doyle drive

Wait ...

To augment its beauty, the San Francisco Chronicle reported this week that The National Science Foundation "awarded the bridge district $3 million...to install outdoor exhibits explaining "its engineering and history." For visitors, this offers the chance to soak up some educational details while ogling its impressive construction. During most of our visits to the Bridge, we've seen people cruise by for a quick picture and maybe a moment of reflection, then quickly depart. The installations will, hopefully, remedy this hurried tourist mindset

So when I fly to NYC to spend a week in business meetings, I pay $5 each way to use the Air Train to the subway. Then I buy a $25 week-long Metro card (which I think has gone up since my last trip). Then I pay $250+ for five nights hotel, plus all the stupid taxes on top of that rate. But that's not enough, so they want me to pay a fee because our meeting place is outside the tourist zone but our hotel is inside it???

That joke tax form with the line to just send in whatever you earned is becoming more realistic every day

=v= Happy zombie season, when profoundly stupid ideas awaken from the dead to lurch around a bit. Here's why the proposal is stupid and unfair (written during its last zombie reanimation in 2005):

From: John Holtzclaw Date: Fri, 11 Feb 2005 21:11:10 0800 (PST) Subject: bridge damage from bikes and peds

The damage to roadways from motor vehicle traffic in the standard formula used by engineers is the speed x (axle loading) to the 4th power.

Speed on GG Bridge:
bicycle -- 10 mph
SUV -- 50 mph
ratio SUV/bicycle = 5

Axle loading:
170 lb person on 30 lb bike -- 200 lb
SUV -- 4000 lb
ratio SUV/bicycle = 20
20 to 4th power = 160000

So SUV damage = 5 x 160000 = 800,000

To be fair, bicycles should be charged the same rate as cars for the damage they cause. Charging bicycles 1 cent = $0.01 is equal to charging SUVs $8,000. If bicycles were charged 1 cent for every 10 bridge crossings, SUVs would be charged $800 per crossing.

While there isn't an equivalent formula estimating pedestrian damage, if it is conservatively assumed to be 10 times that of bicyclists, a 1 cent charge to pedestrians is equal to charging SUVs $800.

Why is snark the only way douchebags can communicate with each other in 2009
