An empty Bay Bridge is shown in an aerial view of San Francisco, Wednesday, Oct. 28, 2009. The San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge has been closed indefinitely after a rod installed during last month's emergency repairs snapped, causing a traffic nightmare for the 280,000 motorists who cross the landmark span every day.(AP Photo/Marcio Jose Sanchez)
After a cable rod snapped during last night's commute, the Bay Bridge closed down indefinitely. Here are some images of just how the closure is affecting San Francisco and the Bay Area today.
Please check back at SFist for complete bridge coverage. We'll post new images here as they come to us.

Great photos!
Awesome images! Some are very "28 Days Later!"
Good observation, Jason. Did not look at it that way. Cool!
Traffic was horrible trying to get from Lombard to Doyle Drive. Then it was lovely...
Go ride the 108 to Treasure Island and back for a kick - have the whole bridge to yourself.
open it to bikes
Walking around SoMa this afternoon has been downright delightful. Only two drivers have tried to run me over instead of the normal ten.
Question: what happens to the cars already on the bridge? Do they shut the road at the last exit and let everyone who's on it file slowly past the broken bit, or what?
Haha, yes. Bike the bridge! CM tried it one labor day, but if there was something official that'd be great! Two lanes-- one for riding, one a buffer. I suppose if it were official the police would insist on a ton of road markings and signs, making it more expensive than just a quick ride. Shame.
