Over at CAV on Friday night -- right next to Cafe Zuni -- Justin of JustInSoma and his girlfriend, Stephanie, were looking for a little wine, food, and relaxation. They got two out of three. While visiting the esteemed wine bar, Stephanie was robbed of her wallet and iPhone. Within 45 minutes, the thieving duo used her cash and cards to purchase $500 worth of groceries at Safeway, $40 worth rental DVDs from the Safeway kiosk, and $700 worth of clothing from Old Navy.
Justin Watt tells SFist "I've drawn a very rough sketch of the pair with a description of their technique which I thought your readers might appreciate---both to protect themselves and to be on the look out."
He goes on to tell us that the staff at CAV reacted with sympathy and concern. "The guy behind the bar at CAV was totally awesome," said Justin. "He called the cops, comped us dessert and a round of drinks, gave us the use of his phone and telephone book so we could frantically cancel the cards."
Eater also picked up the story, so this tall-small duo had better watch their zoot suits and size-14 heels if they know what's good for them. If you know anything about these two, call the San Francisco police at 415-553-1141 and leave a message for officer C. Leung (x12281) regarding case #091094361.

A five-foot black guy in a yellow zoot suit? Has to be real; you cannot make this up.
Rental DVDs? Let's see if they try to return them.
of course they'll return them, these people seem to care so much about societies mores.
The grifters have figured out that SF is ripe for this type of crime. Lots of money, a clueless populace and lots of money and pricey gadgets swinging about.
What's not to love?
Yeah Rob, because this type of shit doesn't happen in every other city in the world.
If you want to be guaranteed to avoid this kind of thing, you need to move to the suburbs and never leave your house.
I hope we will all be very vigilant in order to avoid thing s like this to happen to us.

Yes, I too hope that we will all be very vigilant in order to avoid thing s like this to happen to us.
But here's the real issue -- I am a PR professional and I can't afford the big $3,000 (or more!) media list services -- but I need precisely targeted press release distribution and pitching lists. If only there was a service that offered this for around $1,000 a year!
Perhaps other users on sfist (like yourself, craigspr.org) can help me and be diligent to discover this awesome opportunity.
Well, with the Old Navy shopping spree, at least he hopefully won't be wearing the zoot suit.
Now be on the lookout for Paula Poundstone and Gary Coleman casing restaurants in reasonably-priced performance fleeces and jeans.
Well, at least they got food and groceries.
you know, as bad as thieving is, that's exactly what i thought -- very sensible to buy food and clothes.
Can this be a call-out for bars to put hooks under the bar for the ladies to hang their purses on? This isn't the first time I've heard of a low down (literally) thief pilfering from purses on the floor.
I do appreciate the sketch.
I watched a young woman get jumped and robbed on Grove Street (between Octavia and Gough) at 8:45am today. The thug was real sketchy looking - dressed in black, hood up, lurking around like he was up to no good - and started walking behind me as I passed him. A 21 turned onto Grove and I dashed across to try (in vain) to get on it.
As soon as I got into the street the thug attacked a woman that was also walking alongside us. He ran through the ugly condo escape hatch that connects Grove and Fulton and presumably got away. His victim chased him. I chased him (but asthma held me back). She was much closer than I was and he had already turned left down Fulton. Lots of people around honked, yelled, and a dude from the corner store ran up with a club and joined the chase.
Hayes Valley...increasingly less safe than ever!
Oh, also, I'm not sure, but she may have been plugged in...i-phone or i-pod like. If he got anything from her, I think it was electronic because I think she still had her backpack.
There is no reason to think that it is safe to walk around any city while fooling around with hundreds of dollars worth of electronics in plain view - let alone while wearing earplugs.
