WTF when did this whole "lets start naming every two inches of SF" start. I lived in SF my whole life and outside of the big areas like Castro, SOMA, and etc I never heard of some of these names. A friend from LA came up and told me he was staying in the Western Addition, and I had to google it!
I am still trying to figure out its the western addition to what, because from looking on a Map its in the middle of the City.
The name might have been used long ago, but it was not in common everyday use. You had a few pocket of places with names that where famous for one reason or another like, the Filmore which "now" a subset of The Western Addition.
It just seems today everyone wants to call every plan simple piece of land some name because its the cool thing from LA and NY. It was not this way growing up, I never heard a kid say he was from the western addition, but you did hear Filmore, Jap Town and etc. Just look at the wiki page on neighborhoods of SF and its 110 names or so. For a city that is pretty small that a crap ton.
I guess I am more in line with troymccluresf, few of the names have been around but they way they get thrown around makes your cringe.
I believe there are some misnomers around today. A district is a voting area, and otherwise, you have neighborhoods. Sometimes districts get named after neighborhoods and sometimes the neighborhoods are better known than the districts. The Mission and the Sunset are two good examples of districts, while the neighborhood of the Mission is synonymous with the district. The Sunset, by contrast, has numerous neighborhoods, none of which any non-sunset-dweller would know of. The Western Addition was a district that has undergone several changes of voting borders. In any case, people may know the more well known neighborhoods within the Western Addition (district) like the (former) Filmore jazz district, etc. But in any case, I have to agree with most people that if you don't know the Western Addition, you are pretty naive as to your surroundings if you grew up in the City.
Rincon Hill has always been Rincon Hill. It was thee place to be if you were rich and was covered in mansions until the Second street cut was made in 1869. Rich folk got pissed and moved out for greener pastures in Nob Hill (now accessible by cable car), Pacific Heights and hey, the Western Addition. By 1880 Rincon Hill would become a slum.
@zuhaib - It's been the Western Addition for a VERY long time. So long ago that when it was named that, it WAS an addition to the west edge of the City, past Van Ness. The Castro, on the other hand, used to be Eureka Valley before The Gaysâ„¢ moved in.
That said, I totally agree. Hell I live in Duboce Triangle and I still cringe a bit when I hear it.
It would be interesting to know where this was posted exactly. NOPA is silly but it does distinguish between east of Divis which is dominated by public housing and west of Divis which has evolved into a much more middle class area.
why are land / real estate developers / political and business moguls who named all of these areas decades ago more authentic, more of the people, more authentic than the developers who re-name areas today? i hate this just-cuz-it's-old-makes-it-real BS mentality.
Oh no, I wasn't disagreeing with you, or even placing a value judgement. I meant it literally.
One one side is a group trying to subdivide the city into ever-smaller parcels. On the other are resistant locals, who cite tradition. Both are being sectionalist, in their own way. Provincialism squared.
Fair points, but eventually, when a given block has been renamed three times in a generation, no one knows or cares what it's called anymore and we all go back to "on Hayes somewhere between Divis & Fillmore."
This is like calling Candlestick Park- 3Com, Monster, etc...
It's ALWAYS going to be Candlestick Park to me.
I hate when people come into the city you grew up in and try to change it.
You don't see me coming into your city and calling the neighborhoods, areas, etc... whatever I like. Then again, I wouldn't want to live anywhere else but here.
The one redeeming thing about the Dodgers is they used to have It's Its at Dodger Stadium (though I think they stopped doing that). It's a sad state of affairs that we don't even have It's Its at AT&T Park.
Maybe when Treasure Island is redeveloped we could call it the "Northern Addition?"
In LA this kind of naming stuff is much worse, as the city of LA actually posts city signs around a neighborhood with its name. To increase property values, homeowners will often come up with some off the wall name for a subset of an area just to make sure people know they're in the "good" part of town (whatever the Hell that means?)
Let's just call it SoPacHe (pron. sew-pack-eee) for Southern Pacific Heights.
I'll bet the RE agents can get an extra 50 bucks/sq ft for renaming it as the southern extension of Pac Heights. Because, you know, it's so glamorous and filled with wealth.
Quite true. Drug dealing, afternoon shootings and robbery only happen in the public housing projects and NEVER across the street from the housing projects in those 1.2MM 1 BR condos.
Well, the biggest problem is that almost none of it is actually anywhere near the Panhandle itself. If you're actually living around the Panhandle you live in the Haight. The area around Divisadero has always seemed to be part of the Lower Haight in my mind.
At the same time having defined, acknowledged neighborhoods that encompass legitimate divisions of appropriate size is very useful. If I'm talking to someone and can tell them that I live in the Haight or the Inner Sunset they have a pretty good idea where it is. When that area starts to become too large it's not really very helpful for finding your way around and locating places.
I can support this.
I do support this.
I don't give a fuck either way.
Not that anyone gives a fuck what I think either way.
I call it "the shithole" but you're welcome to call it whatever you want.
I agree with this also. NOPA? Really?
Real estate marketers have to be stopped.
i approve of this message...
This is what happens when dirty white boys in lady jeans have too much time on their hands.
Love it.

Golly, if only we had some sort of networked resource that would enable us to find this information.
It's been called the Western Addition since the 1880's. For a local you sure don't know shit about the history of this city.
I am still trying to figure out its the western addition to what, because from looking on a Map its in the middle of the City.
How is it I took a transfer out here just three years ago and I know more about the history of the city you grew up in than you do?

You are embarrassing yourself now. Please stop.

Duh, kids -- they are separate districts:

Oh so residents north of NOPA call it "Anza Vista"? Doubt it + pics or it didn't happen. Oooooooh!!!
A map from the multiple listing service, from the realtors themselves? That's about one step above citing Wikipedia.
Oh, we do not...
*ducks*
I would like to start an Eastern Addition.
I like that name better than Rincon Hill. Let's make the realtors use it!

Also, go Phillies.

we are well aware that realtors are trying to make a socio-economic disctinction.
Also NOPA is probably derived from the neighborhood association called NOPNA that predates the Realtor lingo.
nopna.org
Why don't they know they're not north of the Panhandle?
Maybe the sign should say "Angels fans" since they don't know where the fuck they are either.
Well Dodger fans can continue calling it NOPA. For the rest of us San Francisco NATIVES, we're calling it Western Edition.
"Mr. Telephone Man, there's something wrong with my line, when I dial Papalote's number, I get a click every time..."
That's a newspaper.
Western Addition.
Lazy ass people who need to abbreviate everything!
Seriously. Not everything needs to be named like trendy parts of NYC.
I adore this thread. Provincialism squared. Awesome.

They took our It's Its and now they're taking our Journey. Fuckos.
There shoulda been a trade: the Journey for the It's-Its. A SF steal.
there's nothing redeeming about chavez latrine.

Easy way to distinguish here. Crime happens in the Western Addition. It never happens in NOPA.
Quite true. Drug dealing, afternoon shootings and robbery only happen in the public housing projects and NEVER across the street from the housing projects in those 1.2MM 1 BR condos.
(suckers!)
Bless you Brock for stirring the pot. Now if we could only get johnny0 to stop calling sanazay la lengua we'd be getting somewhere.

you probably live in lone mountain.
That's on Lone Mountain.
