This story comes out of Florida, not San Francisco, but it's pretty compelling. See, a few years ago, a hospital refused to let a lesbian, Janice Langbehn, see her dying partner, Lisa Pond, simply because they don't like gays. The couple had three kids together too, which made no difference to the Miami hospital. "[Jackson Memorial Hospital] did everything it could to prevent Langbehn from having any contact with Pond, and succeeded in keeping them apart until Pond died," reported Independent Gay Forum. Very recently, Langbehn sued the hospital and lost, with the court ruling that the hospital is under no obligation to accommodate homos. This is insane; this is inhumane. And as horrible and cruel as it is, this is what the people pushing Prop 8 (and Question 1 in Maine) actually WANT to happen to queer folk.
That said, there's a few hours left to donate to No On 1 before their next filing deadline. Donations end at midnight tonight.

Vote to Rescue Marriage in 2010!

I totally agree! Why shouldn't gay peeps be miserable too? If gays only knew what a complete bitch marriage is getting into and out of they would run in the opposite direction.
I say we completely ban all forms of marriage and force everyone to just live and love together. If you don't see eye to eye, you work it out or somebody gets the dog, the other person gets the Pottery Barn glassware and everyone leaves with their own pillow.
Paying money to the state to get married then paying more money to the state to get divorced is such a racket.
totally agree. as a hetero male, having marriage be illegal would be an excellent way to avoid such a risky business!
It would reduce legal expenses, for sure.
So basically you are want no one to have the right to marry before "allowing" gay marriage? In order to "protect" gays from the hardships of marriage? Yeah.
Why do married people need "protection?"
Why do they get tax breaks?
Why is the system skewed to benefit them?
Remove all the benefits (and you're either ignorant or lying if you claim there aren't any..."marriage penalty" in taxes is poor planning) and see how quickly this debate dies.
Put simply: It's all about some group getting something other groups (gays, singles, etc) don't get AND applying logic to a situation: If the goal is to SAVE MARRIAGE banning divorce is far more effective.
oh jackson memorial. memories. my grandmother always insists that it's the greatest hospital in the country.
In all fairness, the court dismissed the case because they ruled that the hospital has no legal obligation to allow any visitors.
While this is a morally repugnant ruling, it certainly sounds like the ruling upholds the law. The problem is the law, not the court.
Suggestion: Instead of making this just a homo issue, how about recognizing that this is a larger "patient rights" issue and reaching out to the larger community that is affected by this? We need legislation that will protect the visitation rights of all families, regardless of their form. Fighting for our rights works better when we build larger coalitions. We must ally ourselves with patients rights advocates to work for legislative changes, and ensure that those changes are made in a way that is inclusive of gay families.
See the New York Times article on this.
Excellent post Jay
I think this sucks but how do you know the hospital hates gays? " simply because they don't like gays" these more to this story young Jedi
No, there is not more to this story. While the woman was dying, the hospital told her family, "this is an anti-gay city and state" and wouldn't let them in until a priest intervened on their behalf. There was nothing other than anti-gay animus. That's it.
no one's going to stand up for marriage? marriage (or civil union) does serve a purpose, which is to certify that the person is question is, in fact, your family, and can do things like visit you in the hospital, where, reasonably speaking, they do have to draw the line somewhere. don't hate the institution because some assholes want to be exclusive about it.
