Edward Riley Slate III, 41, was arrested on Monday, accused of having intimate relations with a 17-year-old student. Slate, a math and special education teacher at Wilcox High School, is alleged to have had an improper affair of the heart between January and June of this year with the underage student. "This is the second teacher-student investigation that we have been involved with in the past six months," Police Capt. Doug Moretto said. "This situation is more common than any of us would like to see." Slate has since been booked at the Santa Clara County Main Jail, slammed with "multiple charges of having sexual relations with a minor." If any other tykes out there might have had relations with Slate, they are urged to call Detective Kirk Kim at 408-730-7120.

omg! i TOTALLY had this guy for Algebra my freshman year. he had just recently married another teacher at the same high school (wilcox), who i ALSO took a class with. sad. =(.
So when you say you had this guy for algebra, do you mean you HAD this guy for algebra?
yahbabe
Was the student special ed?
Does that mean oskarv was in special ed? o.O
Either way, oskarv, tell us -- was he hot? I didn't have very many hot teachers I wanted to do, and I always felt bad about it. =(
well i took a class with him 7 years ago (woah!), but I remember thinking he was decent looking. he kept himself in good shape. his face was warm, but not especially handsome. one thing i remember about Mr. Slate was that he was a math teacher with a bachelors in Psychiatry. i almost remember the most arbitrary facts.
i feel bad for Mrs. Slate - she was one of my favorite teachers evah! =(. he knocked her up while i was still at wilcox.
always* not almost. maybe special ed would have benefited me ;).
Well, he got to live the dream for a while, at least.
What constitutes this particular statutory rape as "making love?"
I dunno, what's the difference between sex (legal or not) and "making love?" Zack and Miri Make a Porno made some sort of distinction but they didn't set a distinctive threshold.
Maybe you could measure the frequencies of the verbals sounds made or something to find an objective measure.
...but then the world can't even agree on what the age of consent should be. (Look at Spain, France, Germany)
Yeah, eighteen seems sort of unreasonably high. Sixteen is a bit more reasonable. Perhaps some sort of sliding scale based on the ages of the people involved if one is them is under 18?
Happened where I went to high school with a teacher I knew quite well right after I graduated. Except there it wasn't statutory (age of consent at 16), but it was still an issue because of ethical issues and they found a way to work in something because she was under 18.
This is happening all over the country. Go to www.schoolteachernews.com and click on the Scandal page. This year they have documented over 300 of these types of incidents. In 2008 they found 478 of these kinds of cases.
The thing is, this is nothing new. Being hot for teacher has been around since the foundation of organized education.
It's just that until recently it was usually just swept under the rug or even romanticized. I actually know someone who married their high school teacher (although this happened decades ago, well before the current hysteria).
I don't really approve of the idea since it creates a conflict of interest (i.e. you can't objectively grade the person), but it will still happen because people are still human and still fall in love. I have no idea why the U.S. got so conservative about it in recent decades.
My great-grandmother married her schoolteacher (my great-grandfather). She was 15, he was 22.
Granted, this was in the 1910s, in Kansas, but yeah, it wasn't really considered weird back then.
