Castro Bar Owner Dies of Swine Flu

doug-murphy-blackbird.jpg

In a truly sad note this morning, Doug Murphy, co-owner of Moby Dick and, most recently, Blackbird, died Friday due to complications from the H1N1 virus, better known as swine flu. He was 41 years old, and was in Palm Springs at the time of his infection, and he had not been traveling abroad, according to business partner Shawn Vergara.

Information about a memorial service will be provided at the Blackbird fan page linked above.

Why couldn't it have been Les Natali?

Think about it, swine flu; Les Natali.

Professional courtesy.

scary when this thing affects those who aren't children or elderly. My sympathies

Lol @ Dantsea. Very very funny!

And, yes. This is very sad! It unfortunately helps us take "Swine Flu" more seriously when a local succumbs to it letting us know this is real and dangerous and just not something with a funny name that originated in Mexico and we keep poking jokes at.

Plus, Moby and Blackbird are really great spots. Two of the few "gayish" spots I actually really enjoy.

dantsea and yehudasf, you both are idiots! Bluefairlane, you pretty much fall into that category as well....

Sit down and shut up, you idiot empiopath.

I love it when five-year-olds "zing" us with their shoot-from-the-hip, tell-it-like-it-is, I-just-learned-how-to-use-a-computer rapier wit!

I'll bet we're all poopyheads, too!

Back in my day, trolling meant something.

Hmm, user id shiny new;
no history other than two comments on this thread in defence of (much)less natali;
shrill "hissy-fit-ed-ness" out of proportion to comments;

Why less, is that you? Or did you hire a Newsome-esque "press secretary"?

dantsea, if you weren't such a pathetic excuss for a human being, I wouldn't have to post a comment! I feel sorry for you!

And yet here you are, balling up your tiny fists and pounding your keyboard with all the rage your bubble-wrapped brain can muster (and increasing SFists, pageviews in the process) because you can't help but feel Ways About Things.

Damn you, dantsea! You made him post a comment!

I am sorry. Sometimes I forget this awesome power I wield. :(

You guys are all poopieheads.

Just to get a sense of what this death says about the virulence of H1N1, I'm curious to know whether he was immunocompromised.

It doesn't matter how much you may dislike Les Natali, it is deplorable that you or anyone would even stoop to wishing such things on anyone in our community.

In addition, how disrespectful for any comments on this article to be anything but condolences or showing your respect for Doug. Shame on you all. This article should be a reminder that none of us are immune to the threat that swine flu could bring. Although it doesn't seem like the pandemic that the WHO says it is, it should nonetheless serve as a warning that it shouldn't be treated lightly.

Oh look. Another fresh userID.

Here's another fresh user ID for you and your friends to chew on, dantsea. BrianSF is, of course, absolutely right.

Comment trolls like, um, you are obviously here (on an obituary thread!) to get your jollies and split. No surprise; you're just acting out typical San Francisco gay behavior.

Rick Murphy was worth a dozen of you juveniles. Wishing H1N1 on someone else in the community is deplorable and worse: it's sick, it's disgusting, it's on a par with "AIDS is God's punishment."

Darling, if I wanted to troll I would have typed "If I wanted to hear anything from you, I'd draw a sharp knife across your throat, watch you collapse, broken and shaking, on a filthy floor and listen to you gurgle for mercy while sloppily flailing at your phone to text a final shoutout to whatever poor soul you held hostage in a relationship, as I fingerpainted pastoral scenes on the wall with your arterial blood."

But I didn't type that, because it would be trollish. And possibly Brock would be cross with me. Furthermore it would be inappropriate to shit on a post about a beloved member of the Castro business and gay community in that manner, much in the way your name-calling here was inappropriate.

You truly owe SFist and the family of the deceased an apology for your classless behavior in this thread, though perhaps it might be better if you simply didn't return.

OK, here's my first correction! Party down!
It's Doug, not Rick. Silly me.

Too bad that Less & his all-girl band (of alts) don't realise that using different i.d.s makes no difference if you log in from the same ip address.

The more you know.....

Since when when , just as I'm getting used to it, do the sarcastic comments about something rate a berating?
Oh yea, since forever....
Now then Swine Flu and an average middle aged male. Negligable risk of death from what I understand, so it's back to the , was his immune system already at risk?, question.
Enquiring minds would like to know.
Not cause I had sex with him myself, but in as far as if not then the threat from 'Swine Flu' is as pandemic as the media reports it to be. I'm sure we all know how trustworthy they can be.
