Late last night, according to SFist readers and KCBS, San Francisco was blanketed with a malodorous odor, stretching all the way from the Outer Richmond to the Financial District to the Excelsior.
One readers reported: "Dude, San Francisco smells like shit all of a sudden. Sure none of the sewers are leaking? Maybe a citywide Marijuana pot growing operation? Unannounced bug spray?"
And another griped: "Ugh, why does the entire city smell literally like shit right now? From the Financial District to the Inner Sunset, it smells like a freshly-fertilized field from my Wisconsin youth.
Again: "OK, according to Twitter, I'm not going crazy. People in the Marina and Excelsior are smelling it, too."
And: "I smelled it too in the Inner Sunset. I walked outside this afternoon and started dragging my shoes thinking I'd stepped in something. It's really really foul. It seemed worse when I was walking west and the wind was blowing off the ocean than when I was coming back east and there was less breeze."
According to KCBS, calls came in from the Sunset and Richmond districts reporting the stench. "A city spokesman said the sewage treatment plant didn't report having any problems and that everything appeared to be functioning normally. A Public Utilities Commission spokesman did say that he smelled something unusual in the Civic Center area."
A couple of theories, suggests KTVU: the cleaning sewer lines near Mission Bay, and "a red tide or algae bloom along the coast that might be the culprit."

yeah, lower haight too...late afternoon though. smelled like wet poo, had to check my shoes.
Went to see a movie Thursday night. At 4th and Mission there was a horrible stench, smelled like a combination of feta cheese and runny poop. After the movie, it smelled like sea water and fresh fish. Same smell in the Mission last night.
Didn't stop in the Inner Sunset. Smelled it strongly in the Outer Sunset.
But I thought it had more of a "pile of dried poo" kind of smell.
I totally checked my shoes too - in the presidio. I kept saying: Why does it smell like the zoo?!
I smelled it walking from Boulevard to my car, on the Embarcadero.
Same here, did laundry and washed dog because couldn't figure out where its coming from. Not sure if relieved it wasn't me, so what was it?
I happened to see a ran over pigeon at the same time as smelling the stink. Feathers everywhere. :(
Man I was at Haight and Masonic last night at 7pm and I nearly gagged. It smelled like someone on a strict sardine diet took their first shit in a week in an over ripe armpit.
Smelled it outside of the UPS on San Bruno - also took the time to check my shoes. Smelled like dog crap smeared along the sidewalks - but they were clean and no dogs in site. Bizarre.
I thought that thousands of San Franciscans, many who are not only averse to perfume and cologne, but to soap and water had organized and simultaneously hit the streets in some form of Critical Ass protest.
Did the GW Bush Memorial Sewage Treatment Plant break down?
y'all might as well be walking around with a I heart San Francisco t-shirt.
buncha frickin newbies.
well said
Yeah, it was such old-hat for true San Franciscans like yourself that KGO, KCBS, KTVU, the Chronicle and SFist all reported on it. Thanks for clarifying, Emperor Norton.
Wow. awesome, thought I was the only one...I definitely checked my shoes, and upper lip.
I'm no "newbie", this was not the usual sewer gas stink that pops up here n' there... It was poo smell and it was everywhere! Concentrated at the intersections, so it was clearly a sewage phenomenon.
Hmm. It was stinky even mid-block on my street, away from any sewer grills. The whole street stunk (more than usual).
We smelled it all the way down in Park Merced!
Crazily I didn't smell it at all. Not in the Haight, not in the Mission and I spent a good portion of the night outside. Not the slightest whiff.
Now we know who to blame!
Whoever denied it supplied it.
everyone sez your shits don't smell.
pelosi
no fucking wonder!
i kept looking at my shoes all day thinking i stepped in shit.
it was really gross how i couldn't get away from it.
poop is funny
Watching my diet lately, eating less meat and bread and dairy but way more beans and greens and fresh fruit, the result of which has been some... er, very strong... well, I hoped folks wouldn't notice. I haven't been near the Sunset in like a week, but friends and officemates confirm that the odor does linger and is quite foul, so, um... SORRY!!!
