In honor of the board game's 60th anniversary, the crookedest street in the U.S. was transformed into the sweetest board game around. Here are some shots from today's Candy Land on Lombard Street. SFist's Ted Weinstein, who was live on the scene, reports that today's event was commercial yet charming, and the kids really loved it. "Capitalism meets childhood," he told us.
A good time was had by all, and the most astounding cake was served after the game. Today's Candy Land bash also makes us wonder, can a life-sized Chutes & Ladders on Vermont Street be far behind?

I was there. Here's my alternative view on the event:
1) The kids are literally pawns in the game. The event producers called out the board moves and the kids just moved from square to square.
2) The announcer had to fill a lot of dead air between moves. It didn't sound like she was prepped to fill that much dead air time.
3) The kids didn't have much to do while waiting for the next move.
4) Some of the Candyland characters, like the Lollipop King, were there, but they just stood around. They had great costumes but didn't do much interacting.
5) Since this is based on a classic board game, there is one winner and several losers. Might be a tough lesson for some of the kids.
I've never played the game, but if this was a fair representation of it, then I've got no interest. Tic Tac Toe, Battleship, checkers, Sorry, and many other children's games seem far more interesting.
Maybe it's only for five year olds, but some of the kids participating today were definitely older than that.
Uhm... you, your attitude is the only thing that appears to suck. In regards to your #5 -- I am so sick of the "every kids a winner" mentality. Some kids are better than other at certain things and there's no facking shame in that. That kid who doesn't "win" CandyLand will win something else down the road. Stop coddling/wussifying America's youth!

it was a blast. we took our little one to watch and cheer the kids on as they ran past us on the sidelines. these were all kids form ucsf children's hospital.
