Car Rams Into Pedestrians In The Sunset

A Honda hybrid, it seems, "[c]lobbered a few pedestrians and stopped the N for a bit in both directions" this morning at 7th Avenue and Irving.

We asked SFist reader blarfiejandro, who ca,e across this scene after getting off of the N-Judah, to tell us more. He reveals: "No first responders were on the scene when I got off of the N, so I called 911 to ensure that someone would respond (they had been notified, apparently)...I was already pretty late so I didn't bother sticking around for too long, but a bunch of witnesses were mumbling something about the woman driving the car talking on a cell phone and that the pedestrian had the right of way (~7 seconds left on the crosswalk signal)."

Anyone else see what went down?

not surprised this would happen over there. people drive TERRIBLY right around 9th and irving - trying to outrun the muni, trying to frantically find parking, what have you. i go to pluto's for lunch a couple times a week and i've almost been hit more than once at that intersection.

that pretty much says it all. Lincoln is worse.

Agreed. Anywhere around 22nd and Irving is REALLY bad too...nobody looks when they backup their car from a parking spot, and people don't seem to understand what a right of way is.

not surprising it was a hybrid. I find drivers of hybrids to be the worst, right up there with Volvos.

Oh please. Stupidity is not limited to certain brands of cars.

Correct. It is the owners of such cars who create the stereotype, not the cars themselves. 8 out of 10 times the asshole speeding up and or tailgating is a Volvo or an Audi.

The girl and I have created a game called Audi or Volvo. When there is some idiot driving like a complete asshole we each call Audi or Volvo. And yeah, it is usually one or the other. Stereotypes exist for a reason kids.

Volvo
Audi
Prius

In that order.

I tend to find a much larger sense of entitlement and correspondingly poor driving skill with BMWs and Mercedes than I ever do with Volvos or Prius.

I agree. BMW's, Mercedes & then Lexus SUVS with female drivers.

I hope one of you guys is there to take pictures when I get hit by a car!

I didn't see it but I heard about it rather quickly as it was a block from home...there have been several accidents and a lot of near misses there thanks to idiots who don't understand the concept of traffic lights, left turns, and so on.

9th and Irving is worse, car drivers are always trying to run over pedestrians who have the light, and don't pay attention to the N Judah, thinking their lame little car can somehow stop a bazillion ton train.

we could pass all kinds of laws and have all kinds of gizmos to try and fix it, but in the end, people in this town like to drive like morons and since they're not punished, it's clear that SF has deemed this acceptable behavior.

Hybrid driver was probably blinded by their own sense of self-satisfaction.

Smug? Me? No, I'm not smug, unless you want to call me being smug for not being smug, which is a bit weird. And gives me a headache just thinking about.

A photo of the driver would be great.

Ouch. Looks like someone got hit a few blocks over... dangerous day to be a ped.

When you drive, pay attention. Simple as that.

The words are that pedestrian safety comes first, but the actions (at least in Rincon Hill and nearby) are that the main goal is to move cars through as quickly as possible. I'd like to see the actions match the words at some point ... maybe Bevan Dufty can add that to his mayoral campaign - Fix Muni, Keep Pedestrians Safe

DEATH!! to all idiots on driving while talking and texting. Sigh.

This is an example of why I think we should ban cars from all Muni Metro lines. I live on 12th with a stop right in front of my house and I cannot tell you how many times I have been brushed back by a speeding motorist while trying to exit the N. They don't even slow down when I have the kids with me. Oh, and I own an Audi but usually take public trans to avoid the idiot/smug hybrid drivers.

They need to add the kinds of stop signs that school buses have, to pop out on the right-hand side when the train stops to let people off.

I've seen asshole driving from all makes and models, none more than another.

Another big problem at the 9th and Irving intersection (and further up at 9th and Judah) are pedestrians who ross directly in front of the N although they don't have the crosswalk light. This happens on almost every N I'm on, ever day: I'm surprised no one's been seriously hurt or killed yet.

We've all got issues I guess.

a good number of people have been hurt, and i believe killed, at 9th and irving.
In the last year or so they changed the stop lights, so that when a train is going by everyone has a red light.
This probably has helped a bit, but i still see people trying to out run (on foot) a turning train.

Two days ago, I was on an inbound N at 9th and Judah. The Muni "T" traffic signal wouldn't turn green. The N operator waited a couple cycles, then finally just went ahead and ran the red while ringing his bell to warn the pedestrians (who had right of way).

I can only imagine how much the settlement would have been if there had been an accident.

My bad experiences with the 9th ave muni signals are more like:

muni signal turns green when the train is still boarding passengers, and everyone stands around waiting... waiting... waiting... confused... ah, fuck it, I'm crossing... ah! run! dammit, _now_ the train is ready to move!

Hybrid's - the new car of choice for Self-Entitled drivers. It use to be SUV's but since "going green" is the new thing to make a person feel like they're better than the next guy, Hybrids are the thing to get. Somehow it makes the driver feel like they're doing more for the environment than the Pedestrian or the Bicyclist.

Please Note:
Yellow Cross Walk = School Zone

I was there when this happened. The young woman who hit that aged mother and her daughter was distraught. She was simply young and inexperienced. She was also in shock, and will not soon get over this. All of you smug cretins making comments about what sort of person you are by the car you drive, well, you don't bode well for how things are going be. Don't breed. Please.
