We guess this gets filed under KFC-like re-brandings without totally throwing out the company name, but Radio Shack want us to start calling it "The Shack" while still holding onto that R-inside-a-circle logo of theirs. They're doing a kickoff event, or something, using two "fourteen-foot-tall laptops"--one in Times Square in New York and one in Justin Herman Plaza here in SF--on Thursday morning in which they'll be streaming live webcam images back and forth. Also, they promise "contests, bands, etc." No word on who these bands might be.
Also no word on who these "friends" are that the new campaign names... "Our friends call us The Shack." Say what? We'll update you as we learn more, or maybe we'll even show you some pictures of this dorkfest as they arrive.

Radio Shack was dead to me the moment they stopped selling electronic components and tools.
No, I don't want an overpriced laptop or a poorly made RC car. No thanks. And I sure as hell DO NOT want to sign up for Sprint.
Are we sure Shack Shackwell doesn't have something to do with this?
Went into Radio Shack recently to pick up a connector for my headset. The minimum wage filipino girl behind the counter could barely take the time to look up from her book to notice that there were people in the store. I would imagine that shoplifting at the average Radio Shack is pretty easy.
Will Lance Armstrong be here to promote their new cycling team?
Radio Shack is the most forgettable store in the world, but they keep making money, profits are up. The outlet on mission is always busy.
Probably because they are the nearest electronics store for a lot of people.
Eh, the Shack (see, I catch on quickly) is a decent place for quick electronic/electrical stuff. Resistors, connectors, fuses, solder, etc. Won't be finding many johnson counters (heh heh, he said "johnson counter"), but those days are over except for all but the most hardcore hobbyists, it seems.
For real selection in SF, tho, where do folks go to buy discrete common ICs, caps, etc.?
probably fry's
Not familiar with any good stores in SF but if you are ever in the North Bay, HSC has all kinds of stuff...http://www.halted.com/
It's kinda like what a lot of nerds remember Fry's being.
I can't understand how Radio Shack manages to stay in business when all they ever sell are two-dollar connectors and patch cords.
But I'm not the only one.
It's easier when the markup on two-dollar connectors and patch cords is 800%.
It's more like Pizza Hut, now known as The Hut.
since when is radioshack's corporate brand neutering a new thing?
It's a little old place where we can get together? Or are they just encouraging their customers to Shack up? (Ok, yes, I couldn't help it - but also, somebody up there in marketing must also have said that out loud AND THOUGHT IT WAS A GOOD IDEA.)

Wonder if they found anybody?
It has not been the same since Zacks, San Francisco Radio, and Market Street Radio left the scene. That was a long time ago!
