San Francisco Mean, But Not as Mean as LA, to the Homeless

According to the National Law Center on Homelessness & Poverty and the National Coalition for the Homeless, who just released a report cloyingly titled "Homes Not Handcuffs," San Francisco is the seventh meanest city in the county. That is to say, we're the seventh meanest place when it comes to dealing with the homeless and homeless crisis in the U.S. Curbed reports that "out of the 273 cities the study looked into, San Francisco ranked 7th on the list."

The breakdown is like this:

1. Los Angeles, CA
2. St. Petersburg, FL
3. Orlando, FL
4. Atlanta, GA
5. Gainesville, FL
6. Kalamazoo, MI
7. San Francisco, CA
8. Honolulu, HI
9. Bradenton, FL
10. Berkeley, CA

Each city was ranked on their criminalization of homelessness, if you will, via "enactment and enforcement of laws that restrict groups sharing food with homeless persons in public spaces," "sweeps of city areas in which homeless persons are living to drive them out of those areas, frequently resulting in the destruction of individuals’ personal property such as important personal documents and medication," "enactment and enforcement of legislation that makes it illegal to sleep, sit, or store personal belongings in public spaces in cities where people are forced to live in public space," and other criteria. To check out the report in its entirety, go here. (Warning, it's a .pdf, which, oddly enough, is the cruelest kind of link!)

Quick! Go be mean to some homeless people! No way we can allow LA to beat us at this important lifestyle index category!

I don't think we're mean enough at all. I'm really bad with giving them cigarettes all the time.

If we were that mean they wouldn't still be here cluttering up the place!

i don't understand how new york is not anywhere on this list - guillani practically kicked them all off the island of manhattan.

Wow.
How the hell Houston and Dallas aren't on this list I have absolutely no idea.

Houston passed a law to make it illegal to give out free food after Hurricane Katrina saw lots of new residents in need. Dallas similarly works hard to keep people from providing food to those in need on public streets.

No towns in Texas?
Not buying this report.

I'd like to know how many of those cities have housed, what is it 2,000 or so, the homeless who are WILLING to accept the housing? Whatever organization issued this report just shot itself in the foot for credibility ... what a bunch of idiots.

really? this list is obviously wrong. there are some cities (San Diego is one) where it is ILLEGAL to give change to homeless people.

We let our slouches drop a steamer on the sidewalk...

I'm surprised that City Hall hasn't spun this news to deflect attention to other problems:

"We respect the homeless' individual property rights, which of course includes their own defecate. This is why our proud sidewalks are so graciously and mercifully poo-strewn."

maybe we should make a video...

2 homeless guys, 1 can

San Francisco is the meanest city to tourists too. Lots of people want to come here, and they can't afford to, so they're unhappy, they look at pictures of cable cars and cry, and that's our fault. Or something like that.

Oh yeah? Well how do we rank on quality of pigeon life? top 3 prolly

Just a note about our "cruelty".

SF spends $200 Million/ yr on homelessness.
We give away an additional $500 million/ yr to non-profits who directly or indirectly help the homeless and poor.

And these nonprofits turn around and beg for more, with our tax dollars, with reports just like this.

C'mon, folks. Let's try to make number #1 next year. BEAT L.A., BEAT L.A., BEAT L.A.!!!!

Nice, just this morning I called the non-emergency cop line on five (5) of them who regularly make my block their home all day every day. Sick of it. And I will keep doing so until it changes.

Wait, really? You can do that? What do the cops do? I'd like to do the same. I see at least a dozen regulars on my street (if not more). I get to watch them buzzing like children on Christmas morning when it's crack day, then sleep it off on my sidewalk for the next 3 days. It's a wonderful sight to behold.

We should find out what #1-6 are doing and add that to our repertoire ASAP...

Someone spent money on this "study" they should be shot... what a waste ....

Well, I am currently homeless. But, down yonder in Florida(were not listed). But, I do have to say this, it's not easy for me and yes people are mean down here big time. I lost a job and it put me on the street's. And, the one thing that keeps me going is this? I dont let anyone, anything get me down, ect. And, the way things are going now, ya'll may be in my shoe's? I hope it does'nt happen. I will say this, I know a few down here that have been beat up and a few have been murdered. It's sad, I knew them. All thay were, were drunks and junkies. And, thanks to all of you that have helped out and to the one's that have'nt count your bleesings you still have a home and a job. The good thing for is? I can at least fish, ect. for food.(I'm close to a big wooded area) And, if any one hates me because, I'm homeless, well thats ok. At, least I'm not selfish as you all are. And, if you were in my shoe's you could'nt deal with it. Beacuse most of you are stupid city folk's( I was born and raised in south jersey). So, ya'll be blessed, and thank the good lord for what you have. Because the current goverment and the poster boy for our president will sooner or later take all thay can from you, me and all of us.

sfist is very far-reaching.

How are neither Las Vegas nor San Diego on that list?

You know, the two places where the Bumfights series was filmed?

We're obviously not trying hard enough. I personally will do my part by spitting on the next homeless person I see.

I'm looking at you Rat Lady!

I just have to look at the Top Ten list to know it is BS. If the cops in Jacksonville, FL see you panhandling and you can't produce an ID with a valid local address, they put you in the back of their car and drive you to the county line. It's not the law but it's what they do.

Gainesville, on the other hand, I saw several homeless people stick around for years. Not transients. People that everyone knew and businesses and residents went out of their way to help.

But I'll say this about San Francisco's homeless. 98% of them MAKE me not want to give them money OR respect. You want my generosity? Don't insult me, get so high I have to step over you on the sidewalk, shit in front of house, break bottles on my steps as you rummage through my recycling at 3am and/or judge me when I don't have anything for you. I had a guy yesterday call me an asshole for not having any money to give him and then tell me my car looked like crap. I'd drive a nicer car if I didn't have to support you, buddy.

There's this homeless asshole who lives under the bus overpass on Tehama between 1st and 2nd.

All he does all day is sleep, panhandle and take shits on the sidewalk.

If you say you can't spare any change, no matter how nice you are about it, he yeels at you and calls you a "faggot"

Fuck the homeless in this town, I have ZERO sympathy.

Uh, three years ago the same organization released a similar study. At the time, we rated 11th, and Los Angeles was 20th.

Jeebus, if we keep getting meaner to the homeless, then why do they keep coming/staying here?

Good to see we're working harder!

I say we can do #1 by next year!
