Mission Loc@l reports that there have been three documented cases this month of Latinos being forced into a vehicle with the intent of mugging them, while walking in isolated parts of the Mission late at night. Police speculate that day laborers might be the target both because they carry cash and are often undocumented and are afraid to go to the police for fear of being deported.
The most recent attack occurred on Friday around 1 a.m., in which a 27-year-old Latino male was picked up near 20th and Bryant streets. He refused to give the assailant's money, was hit over the head with a blunt object, and dropped off at 25th and Vermont Streets. Instead of going to the police, the victim went to San Francisco General Hospital, where a staff member then reported it to the police. Luckily, his injuries were not life-threatening.
On Wednesday at 1:25 a.m., a Latino female reported to the police that two men attacked her and tried to force her into a van, while she was walking near 17th St. and Alabama. They used a taser on her, but they fled when she fell to the ground. There was also a report earlier this month of a man, who was kidnapped and mugged at 3 a.m. after leaving a bar on the 3100 block of Mission Street between Cesar Chavez and Precita streets. The suspects stole his wallet and phone, and then dropped him off a few blocks away.

The only new part is the van, as gangs have been staking out corners down the street from bars for decades.
I've seen 'em catch a mugger in the act, and the victim STILL doesn't want to press charges. "Oh, this guy? No, he's my friend. Mugging me!? No way! That's crazy!"
In California it is not really necessary for a victim to 'press charges' for a crime to be prosecuted, particularly if a mugger is busted by police in the act.
Stealing from day laborers? That's a real low.

There is a group of grifters from other parts of the country who decided that SF-er's are idiots and prey upon us. Mostly from the dirty south - Florida, South Carolina, Georgia, Lousianna, etc...They live in gangs out in the avenues in groups of 10-12 and head into the city together to prey upon the rest of us. You might know that if you were a real cop. Which you are not.
There is a ring leader and an accomplice. Usually a tiny cute piece of ass who lures them in then the assailant smashes him or her in the head and beats the mark. I've seen their work. They're doped up addicts and not that bright, then again a police force smarter than SFPD might have caught them by now. One run by Heather Chong is useless at everything.
