After much speculation this week, the California State Supreme Court will announce its official decision on Prop 8, the gay marriage ban, on Tuesday, May 26
Here's what will go down the day before the ruling is announced:
- 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.: Interfaith Prayer service at Grace Cathedral (1100 California St). Regardless of your position on same-sex marriage, all are welcome.
Here's what will happen the day of the ruling is announced, which seems to involve an inordinate amount of praying:
- 8:30 a.m. to 9:15 a.m.: Service/Blessing at St. Francis Lutheran Church (152 Church St, across from Safeway).
- 9:15 a.m. to 10 a.m.: March from Saint Francis to Civic Center Plaza.
- 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.: California Supreme Court steps (400 McAllister Street) "Everyone is invited to stand with us on the steps to receive the ruling. If you are a couple that married, or wanted to marry and will speak to media, please email your name, contact information, phone number and story to media@marriageequality.org. Please bring your families and allies with you."
- 10:30 a.m.: Circle of Care at Civic Center Plaza. If, in fact, the prop 8 is upheld, Bay Area clergy and congregants will "engage in nonviolent civil disobedience immediately after receiving the ruling" Visit onestruggleonefight.org for more details.
We're sure there will be more, um, events going on that day, ones that don't involve prayer. We'll keep you up to date on those events as they trickle in.
Volunteers are needed for San Francisco's Day of Decision. Want to help? Then, please contact volunteer coordinator Dolores at d_lorlor101@yahoo.com. They need assistance with peacekeepers, handing out stickers, postcards, and more.
For more information on the Day of Decision, please check out the official Facebook page. And be sure to visit Stop8.org for comprehensive coverage about civil marriage equality in California.

And if you're up for a drive to Fresno ("Fresno? Nobody goes to Fresno anymore") check out the Meet In The Middle 4 Equality Event at 1pm on Satruday, May 30th. http://www.meetinthemiddle4equality.com/
Why all the praying? Isn't the whole point that religion should not have any bearing on a legal contract? Am I in San Francisco or Tulsa?
Amen!
Are you a "hater", Bluecanary?
People pray for good fortune. It's sorta universal, except amongst teh athiests (we just hope, pointlessly). People pray for their health, the health of others, for getting a needed job, for a team to score a touchdown, hell, they pray for goddamn food.
If people want to pray in hope that gay marriage is once again legalized in California, then God Bless Em'.
Hey, I was promised by my bible beating mother that San Francisco was a city of godless heathens destined for hell. That's a big part of why I moved out here.
I want my money back.
My comments
The state has all sorts of sex based laws that they have no intention of changing and neither should they change the Marriage law.
Is is discriminatory for example for a gay married pair (where its allowed by law)to be able to publicly enter the restroom together when a married heterosexual pair cannot?
Is this sort of law or laws based on hate for heterosexuals, it is discriminatory? Sure it is, homosexual can go into the restroom as a married pair because they are of the same sex but married heterosexual pairs cant enter because they are different sex, so should we change those laws as well? We are talking about fairness are we not?
Some have done a very good job of deflecting and redirecting the argument into one of equal rights but there is no such thing all laws are not enjoyed by all persons and that in itself is not a fault in the law.
No gays should not be allowed to marry for the same reason men are not allowed into the restrooms with his wife.
"No gays should not be allowed to marry for the same reason men are not allowed into the restrooms with his wife."
I am going to have this embroidered onto a small, satin pillow.
Hey guys, if possible..PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do not tag up the exterior of city hall, regardless of the outcome. I sware, everytime there is any sort of large protest, the fringe anarchist groups do stupid shit (last time they tagged the Abe Lincoln statue). Just keep them in check if you can. On a side note, the amount of police that will be out tomorrow will make the Iraq invasion seem like a cub scout rally, so play nice.
