San Francisco's Nonstaurant Trend, Where to Find One Near You

Lessley Anderson (senior editor at CHOW and our former colleague back in the day) sent us this map denoting the sports where you can find the current "nonstaurant" trend in the Bay Area. It's pretty damn handy for those of you who prefer to get your gastronomic fix from a taco truck.

What's a nonstaurant? Well, according to CHOW, they are "food ventures operating out of trucks, carts, other people's restaurants, shops, etc." These include but are not limited to pop-up restaurants, nouveau street food, and takeout windows in places you wouldn't expect."

SFist asked Anederson how, exactly, did this nonstaurant trend come about? She explains, "I think Nonstaurants are so big now because people want to feel they're getting a unique and adventurous experience for their money, and not just dining at the same Zuni-Chez-Blahblah restaurant everybody else is. The carts, in particular, give people good value, which is important because everybody's poor now. And they also give people a sense of community, as they are able to talk to each other while waiting in line, and eat outside near their bicycles."

Anderson's current favorite? Pal's Takeaway at 2751 24th Street . "I love that it is in such an anonymous liquor corner grocery store, the food is incredible, prices are decent, and the guys have good taste in music. They get to program the iPOD that plays in the store, too, apparently, and there was some obscure Louvin Brothers stuff on there," she tells us.

Be sure to check out the nonstaurant nearest you. (And feel free to go batshit about the term "nonstaurant" in the comments, because we know you're just dying to.)

It's not "nonrestaurant" that had me rolling my eyes as much as "eat outside near their bicycles" and "They get to program the iPOD that plays in the store, too, apparently, and there was some obscure Louvin Brothers stuff on there."

I prefer the term "restaurain'ts"

i never heard that term: "restaurain'ts" - i like it.

i also like your handle...makes me hungry. :)

I patted myself on the back too soon:

My consolation: there is only one google hit for my spelling of "restaurain't"

The Louvins are great! No eye rolling until you listen to them!

I'm not rolling my eyes at the Louvin Brothers, I guess I'm rolling my eyes at the fact that the kind of people who actively seek out nonrestaurants for the "unique and adventurous experience" are also the kind of people that would normally condescend to or outright despise the poor white ("trailer trash")/Southern/Christian people that the Louvins were and performed for, but again, in this case I guess it's considered part of some kind of authentic experience.

Anyway.

You know, it could be just that they like the music. No need to other-think and judge things quite so much.

Brock, I took your advice and tried out a nonstaurant near me! Store On the Corner, which serves Korean grub out the back. Not bad! And cheap! And not to far for a slovenly fat-ass like myself to walk to while I'm at work!

Sadly, there was no iPod playing the Louvin Brothers or anything else.

I'm afraid this is one area where Austin has SF beat:

Austin has some awesome regular old taco trucks and I'm sure SF does too. But, where's my chicken and advocado cone? How about a good ham and cheese crepe?

It's the only thing I miss about my former home town. Well, I miss breakfast tacos, too. But, I can make those at home.

Austin may indeed have us beat on this one, but there is a Crepe truck. Sweet and savory, and its been across from Slim's for like 5 years or something...

HOLY MOLY. A chicken and waffles place right around the corner from my office? I cannot wait for this to happen. I'm ready to get FAT.

It's always funny when someone tries to gain hipster street cred by name-dropping "obscure" musicians that aren't really obscure.

Go get washed in the blood of the lamb.
