'Time for Debate' On Legal Marijuana, Says Schwarzenegger

arnold_pot.jpg

While not all out advocating the legalization of marijuana, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger said it's time for California to "study whether to legalize and tax marijuana for recreational use." today, according to the Sacramento Bee. When asked about a Field Poll showing that a majority of Californians support legalizing and taxing mary jane to raise revenues for economically-strapped California, Arnold had this to say:

Well, I think it's not time for that, but I think it's time for a debate ... I think all of those ideas of creating extra revenues, I'm always for an open debate on it. And I think we ought to study very carefully what other countries are doing that have legalized marijuana and other drugs, what effect did it have on those countries?

Back in 197, in the homoerotic documentary Pumping Iron, the future governor of California was shown taking a massive rip from a joint, saying, "That is not a drug. It's a leaf." What's more, last year, Schwarzenegger's home country, Austria, authorized the legalization of medical marijuana.

SFist asked Assemblymember Tom Ammiano, who is looking to legalize the kind bud, for his thoughts on today's announcement, "With a majority of Californians now supporting legalization, I look forward to working with the Governor and my colleagues in the effort to be the first state in the nation to enact common sense policy on marijuana," he tells us.

One down, one more to go, Tom.

Wow, I cannot believe this story isn't accompanied by the famed Ahhrnold-Toking photo from the 1970's.

"Milk, milk is for babies, Men drink beer" Pumping iron
this is all before the language lessons.

I watched that last week for the 12th time. Great movie and very entertaining. The gym & shower scenes are sometimes a bit too manly for my taste.

Regarding legalization, I don't see many arguments for not legalizing it that I agree on so let's do it and it means more money for the state through taxes. I've never tried it but that's not important. Happier users and a happier government.

I've heard rumors... I think it's only illegal in some parts of SoCal, and only if you're smoking while driving and talking on a cellphone. Then, it's like a $50 fixit ticket.

They're going to take away his party membership card.

Actually, Arnold made the "it's a leaf" comment not in Pumping Iron but in October 2007, after he was Governor, to Britain's GQ. http://www.veryimportantpotheads.com/schwarzy.htm

I don't think he'll have to resign his Republican party membership because it's a fiscally responsible idea:
Marijuana Legalization Could Yield California Taxpayers Over $1.2 Billion Per Year
Additional Spinoff Benefits Up To $12 -$18 Billion
