SF-Based Gay Grifter Crew Being Held for Murder

kaushal-niroula.jpg In case you missed this fascinating tale of con man Kaushal Niroula in the current issue of SF Weekly, grab it before it's swapped out or read it online here. Niroula is a Nepalese-born immigrant who, along with four local co-conspirators including a former bartender at Jet bar in the Castro, allegedly made a 74-year-old Palm Springs man disappear and proceeded to start emptying his house and trying to sell it for half of what it's worth.

Niroula--described as haughty and well dressed with a British accent--also seems to have been instrumental in the New College scandal of last year, having convinced the president there that he was Nepalese royalty and poised to make a $1M donation, if only he could have free tuition for a semester -- thereby extending his student visa, buying time for $1.3M in con jobs with various wealthy marks, and getting the University stripped of its accreditation in the process.

If you've got ten or fifteen minutes to spare, read Matt Smith's whole story.

I haven't read the story, does it really say that because he got free tuition he was thereby able to "extend his student visa, buying time for $1.3M in con jobs with various wealthy marks, and getting the University stripped of its accreditation in the process.?

That's quite a con. Mamet should write a movie about him.

You don't see too many old-style grifters these days.

That article was absolutely riveting. The screenwriter in me (ugh) wants the rights.

Really fascinating story. It's worth taking the time to read the article.

Great story, but the guy seems like a total asshole, charming or not.
