Sean Penn to Lobby For 'Harvey Milk Day' In California

State Senator Mark Leno and Sean Penn plan to reintroduce a bill Tuesday to mark Harvey Milk's birthday as a "day of significance" across California. Originally vetoed by Arnold Schwarzenegger -- the lug said only people in San Francisco would care about it -- the success of Gus Van Sant's biopic about the former slain San Francisco supervisor at this year's Oscars has prompted the method acting, Marin resident to push for a holiday honoring the murdered gay rights activist.

Sense: that graphic makes none.

If you are familiar with Jeff Spicoli it does.

The bagel kinda looks like the top of an "8." Where's the bottom half?

I agree, other than the fact that Spicoli and Harvey Milk were both played by Sean Penn, I fail to see the humor.

On to, you know, discussing the topic....

I think it's a great idea!

I think the pic is fair game since they are supposed to correlate, right?

but yeah it's probably a great idea. unless its just another day off for city/state workers then....

Seems like it was already vetoed by the Schwarz less than a year ago.

why'd you go all to snopes to get a fact that was contained in the post?

Bad idea. Like the minute silence, this mawkish crap is becoming meaningless. The less state enforced respect paying we have to do the better. Plus we don't need another excuse for banks, post offices and public services to get paid for doing another day of no work. Lets see if Sean sticks to his guns when one of his movies is shut down for Milk day.

This isn't about making this a HOLIDAY, just as it is stated, "A Day of Significance".

If I really wanted to make people forget something, the first thing I would do is to declare a "Day of Significance".

i declare the time i got caught fucking that chick from hobson's choice a day of significance.

Most other countries have far, far more holidays than we do. Compared to the US average of 10 days off the UK averages at 25 and Germany at 30. We seriously need to have more days off. Even with what little we have most employers don't recognize many of them. How many people here didn't get President's Day off or any number of other holidays?

Not to mention a maximum on the number of hours your employer can make you work in a week. Yeah, if you're hourly you'll get overtime, but there's nothing stopping them from putting you on salary and working you 70 hours a week or making that overtime mandatory.

Who gives a crap? If Harvey is a hero to you, as he is to me, why does a "day of significance" mean anything. Be independent...

And tomorrow is SQUARE ROOT day or something (03.03.09).

Sean Penn is a bit of an ambulance chaser. I don't recall him saying anything about Harvey Milk or San Francisco in his Oscar speech. I was amused however when he went sawed off shotgun renegade on the city of New Orleans after Katrina.
