With support from Supervisor David Campos, CA Superior Court Judge James P. Gray, and SF Sheriff Mike Hennessey, Tom Ammiano held a frenzied press conference at the State Building this morning.
The topic at hand? Legalization of the kind bud.
The Marijuana Control Regulation and Education Act would, if somehow enacted, put a $50 per oz. tax on mary jane (i.e., sale, transportation, ingesting), allowed for folks aged 21 and over only (just like alcohol), and possibly help not only with the state's failing economy but the environment as well.
During this morning's press conference in San Francisco, Ammiano said, "California has the opportunity to be the first state in the nation to enact a smart, responsible public policy for the control and regulation of marijuana." This act could also have wildly beneficial effects on police enforcement's prioritization.
Pot, however, would still remain illegal under federal law.
Update: SF Weekly was there too. They tell us it wasn't "frenzied." Sorry. It was the pot paranoia talking.

$50/oz tax?! So for each ounce, I'm supposed to pay tax equivalent to an additional eighth? That more than cancels out the quantity discount the small business owner I transact with gives me.
$50/oz tax isn't all that much. That's equal to the average cost of 1/8 an ounce today. the way weed is dealt today, the extra costs associated with compensation for risk are much more than $50/oz.
Nice to know I'm paying the going rate....
$50/oz tax is reasonable and appropriate.
When the base cost of goods sold is sharply reduced due to legalization (cultivation, transportation, selling), weed will still be cheaper than it is now.
Gotta think big picture.
Why is it reasonable? Sounds more like you're arguing for price supports, or at least rent-seeking. Why not make it a percentage of the price?
Yeah, percentage of price seems much more simple.
Aren't all "sin taxes" applied by volume? Alcohol, cigarettes, gasoline...
Are they going to ensure quality, labor, and health standards as well? Or is it just (as KatyG mentioned) yet another democratic party attempt to crush small business owners?
Even if this bill somehow gets passed, marijuana will still be illegal under federal law. The DEA will continue bust dispensaries, so there really won't be any cost savings.
yes, the federal problem needs to be addressed first. i like to imagine that the other pieces being discussed will have a way of falling into place once the federal bully is addressed.
Let's get this done and move on to legalizing meth. My house is a wreck.
I believe the legalization of meth was a critical component of the stimulus package that dentists asked for.
And this is where ya keep yer weed...
