Nominations: Hug a Journalist Day, 2/15

PressHat3_2.png

Ever hug a bottle of cheap vodka caked with cocaine residue? That's what hugging a journalist is like. And this Sunday, Feb. 15, is Hug a Journalist Day -- at least according to this newly created holiday on Facebook.

See, now more than ever, journos need your love. They work hard for little pay (some of them, anyway), have nervous breakdowns over newfangled technology, must deal with a series of tubes combined with the recession, and populate the world with some of the best drinking buddies a drunk could ever find..

So, which scribe deserves the tightest squeeze? They've tenaciously stuck to a doomed career path, and deserve our love. However, we're not about to handout a rare moment of physical affection to just anyone.

Poll time! OK, let us know in the comments which Bay Area/Bay Area-based reporter, photographer, cameraman, editor, producer, cartoonist, columnist, designer, illustrator, artist, clerk or stringer is most hug worthy. Name us anyone notable at Examiner, Chron/SFGate, SFBG, SF Weekly, Bay Area Reporter, Street Sheet, Macworld, Mother Jones, Wired, eWEEK, Nob Hill Gazette, href="http://www.sanfranmag.com/">SF Mag, or any other local pub. (Such as: Dan Noyes! Katy St. Clair! Matthew S. Bajko! Jason Brooks! Justin Juul! Catherine Bigelow!) We'll take the names, stick them in a poll, then you, dear readers, can vote for a winner.

Nominated your favorite journalist in the comments.

Most of them work hard for little money. It's a lot of hard work to get anywhere near recognition and a decent salary in journalism. And that's why I ditched that career path not long after college.

Good call. Avila is incredibly gorgeous.

I'll hug you Brock. Bring the vodka bottle.

I'll hug any journalist as long as they write about what I want them to and give me their sweet, sweet columbian cold/gold.

sure. hold it on a sunday when no one's around.

I'd hug Theresa Garcia and hold it just long enough to make her uncomfortable.

I would rather hug Amanda Witherell from the Guardian, than C.W. Nevius from the Chronicle

BTW: The link for the Street Sheet is:

Hmm, Ray Ratto or Melissa Griffwood? Ray Ratto or Melissa Griffwood? Decisions, decisions.

I want to give Gasia Mikaelian a hug.

Would Laurel Wellman count as a protest vote?

Alexis Madrigal, wired.com. The most tireless science/environment reporter alive.

I am going to second this nomination: Alexis Madrigal is a tireless worker and believes in his work greatly.

He also isn't afraid to work hard outside of Wired. He was the first to experiment with our nonprofit to do community funded reporting and he did a MONSTOR of a story for very little money: http://spot.us/stories/69

Um, could I get a cocktail with that hug? Whether or not I place, I'd like to thank the Academy for this most awesome nomination! Really, Brock ... you know how those 4th Estate-types are. I'd include a cocktail, too ;-)

Yet again, the question remains: Is a blogger worthy of a hug?

I think Christopher Caen is worthy of a hug.

Brock gets one too. Sans cocaine, plus vodka.

I feel better already. It almost feels like the mediapocalypse really isn't coming.

Let's hug Jane Tunks! Because she's my friend, and she's a rockstar. (Chronicle)

Jane Tunks is a fantastic human being, writer, and editor. Good call.

Peter Jamison, SF Weekly!!!!!

Dennis Richmond! I've been waiting years to get some Richmond action...

Josh Sabatini, SF Examiner. That guy's a classic!

Thank you, Jen and Brock, for remembering the copy editors, who happily toil in obscurity, without bylines or glory, for you, the reader. We fight against misspellings, bad grammar and, most of all, errors in fact (and judgment). And we don't even roll our eyes when writers get all diva on us!

I think the winner should get a cape with a "J" (for journalism) on it.

i will forego a hug in favor of job security and a living wage.

I hear you SFX.

I call A.C. Thompson. Best investigative jorno in the city.

I am totally going to give my climbing partner (Kaitlin) a hug. She is fantastic and always tells me the best crime stories that she is covering.

I vote for the Chron's Henry K. Lee. His crime reporting is both tight and right -- clear, concise, dispassionate, crimey.

Also, if I had to tolerate the daily criticism of SFGate's comment board neanderthals, I would probably gouge my eyes out with a red pencil.

*hugs* to Tim K! My favorite journalist!

I'll take some of that Tim Kingston action too.

Why Mr. Tim Kingston, of course!

Tim Kingston, who else? He needs the hugs (and the vodka).

Everyone pile on Timothy Kingston!!

I hug Tim Kingston every chance I get!

Tim Kingston, who needs and deserves the hugs.

I suggest madeline smith moore, MacArthur Metro, reporter and writer. She can write a flaming letter to the editor. Also in the "They work hard for little pay (some of them, anyway), have nervous breakdowns over newfangled technology" link, the reporter was right. Speaking as someone who has been both reporter and pr hack, that pr hack should have immediately called the reporter back. Sure he was a trifle obnoxious, but when you have to deal with pr hack/scum/protozoa like that one, you are bound to get a little tetchy.
PS Isn't it nice that Tim Kingston is getting all those hugs? Now guess my name....
