Did You Ride the 33 Outbound Yesterday Afternoon?

Dan_bio_pic.jpg

ABC 7's Dan Noyes needs your help, public transit riders! It's for a story. According to his latest tweet, "I-Team's looking for anyone aboard MUNI bus 33 outbound yesterday @3:45pm who witnessed an altercation with driver at Ashbury and Frederick." Did you? If so, contact Noyes at Dan.Noyes@abc.com. Update: Be sure to catch the top of the six o'clock news on ABC 7 with the latest altercation on a Muni bus.

finally a use for twitter! doing reporter's jobs for them!

That's the kind of unnecessarily cynical nonsense that makes commenters seem like paranoid, torch-carrying, anonymous villagers. Relax. The man's trying to find someone who rode a bus by using the internet. DUH.

wow that metaphor is tortured! is it reporters or twitter that is the monster?

I believe the real scare monger is Dan Noyes whose previous tweet is "Dan is on the air at 6:30 tonight, showing how dangerous SF's public transit can be."

this fails as news gathering, journalism, and public interest.

"this fails as news gathering, journalism, and public interest"

Seems like using new tools to do a faster, more thorough job. Perhaps you could elaborate.

I could be overreacting, but tweeting the entire world in order to prove your thesis seems more like making the news, and not merely reporting it.

"...showing how dangerous SF's public transit can be."
The rule of thumb is that the more over-the-top the teaser is, the less newsworthy the actual story. Go ahead and watch it tonight but don't say I didn't tell you so when you say, "big, fat hairy deal" after.

gathering news doesn't mean you scream "scoop!" while wearing a press ticket in the brim of your hat in between sips of aged scotch.

very fetishistic of you.

That's because everyone knows you do it in between sips of Midori margaritas.

Doing it between sips is for amateurs.

Ah, so if one has to put down one's drink or one's... other vice... then it's not really news?

I like this approach.

In this town it's all about the Appletinis

Yes it does. And it also involves freckled-faced boys with overly large caps shouting "Extra! Extra! Read all about it! on street corners, next to fire hydrants, with other kids playing stickball in the background. And the young wives of newspaper barons buying enormous hats at department stores, that's also a major part of the newsbiz that forms in my mind when I close my eyes.

Hmmmm. Well now I'm glad I decided not to take the outbound 33 about this same time yesterday. Wonder what happened.

Obviously a heated American Apparel debate got a bit out of hand.

I bet at least one of them was wearing an AA tshirt.

You know, I think ABC7/Dan Noyes deserve a heap of credit. Ok, using the Internet to find people who can give a first-hand account of something that happens everyday but most of us just suffer in silence--um, the problem is? Maybe the driver is a serial passenger-berater, or maybe the driver was exemplary in handling a passenger who was bothering everyone else. Both happen all the time, and they make a big difference in our daily life, so, huzzah Mr. Noyes, and, huzzah SFist for using your power and wide reach for good.

Thnaks. And no offense to any other media outlets out there, but KGO/ABC7 got a good jumpstart on reaching out the local bloggers and the whole world wide web thing.

My wife is in the biz and everybody tweets. Infactactually some ABC7 people told her a few weeks ago "if you want us to read your press release, tweet it."

Oh! Speaking of twitter and reporters, here's a National Post reporter going off on a PR flack... using Twitter. Screeech!

really though ...

Twitter, hashtags, network effects, liveblogging,

hasn't this argument already been settled? The luddites lost.

> The luddites lost

/runs you over with horse-drawn carriage.

HA! HA! HA!

his crusade on muni drivers is pretty silly. what's next? lazy trash workers that don't pick up compost?

isn't there, just south of SF, a billion dollar international industry populated with arrogant rising stars and dangerous old monarchs?

why not investigative reports on suspected industrial espionage and dirty machiavellian alliances? mraaa-ha-HA!! what the hell television!

no wonder i dont watch the news...i hate that show.

So this MUNI driver is in no was a "thug" or a "Rap music listening, gold chain wearing criminal" as some people have put out there.
Look and the picture and video CLOSELY. The drivers hand is not around the mans neck. It's on the mans bicep.
The only reason the driver stepped off the bus to restrain the man was because the man wouldn't step away from the bus so the driver could pull away safely. What if the man had stumbled and while the bus was pulling away injured himself? The man should have stepped away and let the bus pull off. Instead he wanted to continue the verbal back and forth with the driver. The driver was taking consideration the safety of the passengers on the bus as well as the safety of this man and acted accordingly. The only reason MUNI took the actions they did after this driver has been with them for years and years and years was because it got all over the news! They had to make an example of this driver because they had to save face!! Is that fair? This driver is not a violent person and he is soft spoken.
Why doesn't the City do anything about all the homeless and drunks and drug users who roam around the streets begging for hand outs? Instead the driver has been made an example because of a drunken person who didn't know how to act properly in public. It's not like he wasn't allowed on the bus. He was asked to move back and he should've instead mouthing off to the driver. The drivers need to be allowed to have some room to be in control of their bus, and MUNI needs to show some support to their drivers instead of showing support to some drunk man who was acting improperly in public.

AND TO THOSE WHO ARE SO QUICK TO PICK UP YOUR VIDEO CAMERA AND TAPE AN INCIDENT AND RUN IT TO THE MEDIA.....THINK ABOUT THE CONSEQUENCES!!!!!!!! WHOEVER TAPED THIS INCIDENT AND COULDN'T WAIT TO GET IT TO THE MEDIA...SHAME ON YOU! YOU BASICALLY HELPED RUINS SOMEONES LIFE. CONGRATULATIONS! YOU DID WELL! HOPE YOU'RE HAPPY! HOPE YOU GET GREAT SOUND SLEEP AT NIGHTS! AND IF YOU DON'T BELIEVE IN WHAT GOES AROUND COMES AROUND YOU SHOULD! BECAUSE YOU WILL DEFINITELY DEFINITELY ENCOUNTER SOME HARDSHIP DURING YOUR LIFE, AND WHEN YOU'RE DOWN AND OUT AND YOU'RE CRYING OUT "WHY IS THIS HAPPENING TO ME??!!"" ...PLEASE THINK BACK TO FEBRUARY 2009 WHEN YOU WERE ON MUNI AND YOU DIDN'T KNOW HOW TO KEEP YOUR NOSE OUT OF SOMEONES BUSINESS AND THEN PUBLICIZED IT. THE DRIVER IS A GOOD PERSON. IF YOU KNEW HIM YOU WOULD TOTALLY REGRET HOW YOU VIDEO TAPED AND RUINED HIS LIFE. THANK YOU!!!!!!!
