Stephen Fowler, "Worst Husband in the World"

Wow, what dicks. And not in a good way.

Nasty Now Valley millionaires Stephen Fowler and his wife, venture capitalist and "certified hypnotherapist / life coach" Renee Stephens, proved themselves just trashy enough to appear on ABC's Wife Swap a couple of weeks ago. Not only did they come off as jerks (and, no, they were not playing up to the cameras, meta TV sleuths -- if there's one thing that left-leaning nerds fail to grasp, it's the medium of television), but as complete morons as well.

Viewer response was so bad -- i.e., they'll be back on the show next season -- that Stephen Fowler, who is British, had to publicly apologize for his innate character as a human being AND resign from two environmental nonprofits on which he served.

Valleywag's Owen Thomas has the scoop.

The fallout: Internet message-board commenters went even crazier than usual, posting Fowler's home address, which in turn prompted him to threaten to sue the website where it had appeared. Someone launched stephenfowlersucks.com. On Friday, Fowler finally apologized publicly (on his wife's weight-loss blog) and resigned from the boards of two environmental nonprofits on which he served. And his wife apologized, too, stating that he needed "professional help." We want to know who's apologizing to the kids.

The Fowlers give the fine, upstanding, inclusive, nonjudgemental, eco-friendly dwellers of Noe Valley a bad name. To cringe at more charming Fowler behavior, go here.

Oh, and for future reference, this is how being a psycho prick is done within the woman-are-interchangeable-creatures reality show genre.

Oh my god, this clip doesn't even touch the disgusting nature of this man. Yes, I saw this episode (I know, I know, I admit it) and was floored by his complete disrespect towards this woman. He totally deserved eveything he got and in my opinion, should lose his wife and kids. A disgrace of a man.

I'm intrigued. I don't suppose the entire episode is posted anywhere?

I cannot find it, though I'm sure it's out there somewhere. In the meantime, I updated with a link to a more extensive clip.

I've been looking for it on torrents but have been unsuccessful.

It's on YouTube in 5 parts:

1,2,3,4 and the delightful conclusion in 5

Get 'em while they last.

4,964,000 viewers according to Nielsen .

Sorry, but it appears there are actually 6 parts. Enjoy!

shoots... i got to part 3 before youtube took it off. this man is just despicable. he has no respect. i cant believe i didnt hear about this until today on sfist. i guess its not really news worthy....just a guy being an asshole on national tv.

I hear this kind of snide condescension towards "Middle America" in SF all the time.

shocking..a reality show found a bunch of foul folks and made a tv show so we can all say how much better we are than them! shocking!

I watched a few clips and yes this fowler guy comes off as a snotty snotface, but I really get sick of the media playing up everyone in SF as some overpaid douchenozzle with candyland nonsense ideas too. no one came off as particularly wonderful in this show, but that's what it's there for.

Yee-ikes. If I see them around the 'hood I'm gonna try and pick up on her; she looks like Laura Kightlinger. Which is good.

Plus, if you notice they only really show her top half throughout the show...until the end. She looks like one of those rap guys girlfriends.

Hmm, I had unchecked the reply checkbox on my first comment.

Yeah, WifeSwap in particular is awful. Maybe very early on it was about fostering understanding and appreciateion for different lifestyles; it seems that it's just about crapping on them.

no, i'm pretty sure it's always been about crapping on them.

I didn't actually disagree with the SF ideas: education=good; healthy food=good; exercise=good; pushing your kids to achieve=good. And yes, the MO woman was obese and uneducated, and I hate that whole mid-west :This is amurka, love it or leave it, flag-worshiping nonsense that I was exposed to so often when I lived there.

However, the MO woman did have a point that these people need to loosen up, let their kids have a little fun, and pay some attention to them. Paintball's not my bag (the bruises I've seen it inflict scared me away early on), but they were having fun as a family, so what's the problem?

And even if the SF people had the superior ideas (in my own snooty transplant view), you don't convince anyone when you act like such a tremendous asshole as this Stephen Fowler did. For all his education and his high-GRE score, the guy scored in the basement when it comes to class. And he makes all San Franciscans look like shitheels, which pisses me off. Because there is nothing I hate more than having to listen to that "land of fruits and nuts," shit on the rare occasions I do have to go home. And this guy just gave fodder to every relative I have.

Bluecanary,

SF Ideas? You need to live in the Sunset or Portola areas a little bit more, if you're going to reduce San Francisco Ideas to left-leaning, educated yuppies and hipsters. Though I do share such values, I think you need to look at the southern and western region of San Francicans too.

I've been in SF since I was one (though I've lived elsewhere for awhile), and I do say I dislike the snooty attitude of the newer SF residents have about their superior education, gadgetry, income and ideas.

And honestly, I'd rather hang out with "rednecks" than pretentious cityslicking snobs who stress about how their favorite co-op, shade-grown, fair-trade, carbon-neutral coffee shop was closed this morning when they stopped by in their BMWs this morning.

I don't think it's so much an "SF" attitude as a "new money" one. No grace, even for someone as genetically class-conscious as a Brit.

Perhaps I should clarify: stereotypical SF ideas/what the rest of the country assumes SF is like. It's what I moved here for. If you're insinuating that the Sunset and Portola areas are more conservative, well, thank you, but if I wanted to surround myself with conservatism, I could have stayed back in Oklahoma, where three bedroom home in a choice area costs $125K.

I'm not a yuppie, I don't mouth off like a self-important asshole about my "left leaning" beliefs, but I'm glad they are shared by most of my neighbors (who don't really mouth off about them, either).

But I will admit to finding the whole "I'm a native!!! I've been here since I was one!! I'm special because my parents made a decision I had nothing to do with" attitude about as annoying as you find the yuppie douchebag superiority attitude, so I guess we have irritability in common.

We are all Stephen Fowler!

Unfortunately, these horrible people just confirmed for much of the country the SF stereotype. Ugh.

I hope somebody paintballed his house with tofu and sunshine before/if the address was removed from the StephenFowlerSucks page.

I've watched this show a couple times, and the whole point of it is finding the biggest walking stereotypes they can, so the audience can feel good about judging them.

If they picked normal people, you might have some real learning, but that wouldn't be much a TV show.

Thank you so much for being the first and only media outlet to do a story on this. I find it fascinating how ABC and it's long reach has managed to completely block any media regarding that episode of Wife Swap. I posted the episode in pieces on Youtube, they had me blocked within HOURS. They are really on this this thing full time. I have recorded all television media that would ordinarily cover such antics, NOTHING. Even The Soup! on E, was restrained, just showed clips of the husband from the midwest. When the Fowlers posted their apology, after the huge internet outcry, they then removed it for 'reasons they could not state'. Probably exploring a lawsuit.

What most people don't realize is this was an almost unprecedented event for so many reasons. The fact that there were phone calls to the Fowler residence within minutes of airing on the East Coast. The fact that Stephen Fowlers business associates were published, and demands made for his firing/resignation. That even Google Earth had some kind of marker first, on his residence, and later his address was blocked on there. The Fowlers had to hire 24/7 security, I don't know for how many days. People wanted to turn them into CPS for emotional child abuse. That neighbors wrote in to blogs begging not to take things physical, that they did not ascribe to Stephen Fowlers snobbery, and they did not want someone in their Noe Valley neighborhood committing acts of violence, especially by mistake. That literally THOUSANDS of people signed onto the ABC web message boards that night, to comment. ABC had someone on that board full time deleting comments right and left...everything from posted personal information on the Fowlers, to comments that were not really TOS violations, just heartfelt disgust. That on Friday, January 29, (keep in mind this episode aired East Coast at 8pm), Stephen Fowler became #50 of the most searched on Google. That was a Super Bowl Weekend to boot, lots of other things to look up on the net. That at least one of his business associations, Pacific Environment, took the time to send out emails to most of the people who wrote to them via email. Blogs that were personal to a few hundred, became comment forums for thousands. There was a song posted on YouTube, Stehpen Fowler is a douchebag. A few of his 'friends' tried to defend them, but there wasn't much they could say. A few also tried to capitalize on the Misery that is the Fowlers as well. I find it fascinating there was such a huge backlash, yet somehow in a week when we hear over and over the rant of some two bit movie star we don't hear anyone commenting on the attitudes and the country's reaction to the truly egregious behavior of one Stephen FOULer.

That's because Christian Bale is pretty.

I am from the Midwest, bluecanary. I look at your comments, upset that this guy has given your family too much ammunition to feed their 'typical SF' stereotype comments with, yet would like to point out that your own comments/misgivings expressed about the Midwest have already done that for you. You really didn't need Stephen in your corner...but glad you got him. (IE: Better you, than me!)

That said, I actually wrote in to comment on the obnoxious, vulgar slug that is Stephen Fowler and his wife and the sad truth that Americans apparently find this type of confrontation entertaining. I can't imagine the network had no idea what they were getting into, though. Far from it. I totally believe they knew this guy was a snobbish elitist pig when they signed him on. People like Mr. Fowler don't really have a clue how obnoxious they are and I doubt he came across any differently in the interview than he did on camera. In fact, I am sure that's what the network picked up on immediately and why they found Gayla the perfect foil for him. They sure didn't do it by accident. Gayla should sue the network for being set up as the pigeon.

While I personally think it's kind of sad that this is what the networks think American's find entertaining, look how many tuned in! The networks are apparently right! I didn't watch it myself...I don't actually have a tv. And no, bluecanary...that $125K mortgage has not over extended me, preventing me from investing in cable...I simply think television is a huge waste of time. And this show, like many others before it, is total proof of how low America has sunk when it comes to entertainment value and how even lower the networks have sunk to supply the demand.

One final comment for bluecanary...I think your "this is Amurka" rant pretty much sealed the deal for you, shitheel.

no tv? are you an aspiring resident of the mission?

I own a TV just so that I have something to spit on.

I live under a rock in San Francisco, ie I don't watch much TV.
But let me tell you this, I have a friend named Steve Fowler. He is a great guy & fantastic musician who I have the pleasure to have a band with.
Well guess who has been hassled with irate calls, threats through emails & the united postal service? STEVE FOWLER THE OTHER GUY WITH THE SAME NAME WHO Happens to live in the same city. Thanks for just looking for a name folks. GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT!
Please check before you start calling my friend from some bar after a couple.
