SFist Watches: Your Locals On Reality TV
Here's to mediocrity!
We're back from our little holiday hiatus. Did you miss us? (Don't answer that.) Luckily, "Top Chef" has been on hiatus too. So try to remember back two weeks when that last new episode aired...
Martha Stewart was the guest judge for the Quickfire Challenge, which was to create a "holiday one-pot wonder." Our local girl Jamie chose to make sea scallops over a potato and kale stew. Martha liked the dish, calling the scallop "perfectly cooked," but the win went to Ariane.
The Elimination Challenge was to cook for 250 people at an amfAR charity event. They'd have to base their dishes on one of the days from the "12 Days of Christmas" song. Jamie got seven, or "seven swans a-swimming." For whatever reason, this made her choose, once again, scallops, this time "swimming" in a vichyssoise. Most of her prep that night involved cleaning the scallops.
The next morning the chefs returned the kitchen to find that one of the refrigerators was left open, thus ruining several cooks' dishes. Not Jamie's, though! But, since she didn't have a lot of prep to do, she was able to lend a hand, along with the other chefs, and help out the unfortunate. Awwwww. The spirit of Christmas!
At the benefit, Jamie's sea scallop in a vichyssoise with lemon argrumato, leeks and micro greens did not go over well, the main complaint being that the scallop was raw and slimy. From perfectly cooked scallops, to perfectly awful scallops.
Unsurprisingly, Jamie was among the bottom. The judges didn't like that she hadn't kept the scallops cold enough to serve them raw, and thought she should have just seared the dang things. Things were not looking good for Jamie, but because so many of the other dishes were mediocre, and because all the chefs chipped in and helped each other after the fridge fiasco, and because it was a Christmas show, and they needed another gimmick, the judges decided not to send anyone home. But they all get a lecture from Tom to step it the hell up.
Which Jamie will do this week by making scallops. AGAIN.
