The body found inside an elevator shaft at Sharon Building (55 New Montgomery Street) has been identified as 38-year-old Dr. Daniel J. Kliman, an Alameda physician and "one of the Bay Area's foremost pro-Israel activists."
Quite the controversial figure, Kliman curiously died late last week after allegedly stepping into an open shaft, plunging several stories to his death. Kliman, an Oakland resident, was the co-founder S.F. Voice for Israel, an organization that demonstrates on behalf of Israeli causes. Members of S.F. Voice for Israel have asked SFPD to investigate his death in order to rule out homicide.
Update: Word is that Kliman did not walk into the open elevator shaft as the media has reported. Inspector Matt Krimsky of the San Francisco Police Department tells SF Weekly:
"He gets into the elevator car. For some inexplicable reason, the elevator gets stuck between floors -- we think between the sixth and seventh. He is somehow able to open the doors from inside and sees that he's between floors ... [w]e know he got into the elevator ... and ended up in the elevator well. How he did that is under investigation."
Krimsky, who is investigating Kliman's death, goes on to say that while "words have been twisted around," there is "no evidence of foul play whatsoever." Read more about it here.

The pictures at http://www.indybay.org/newsitems/2004/07/24/16899491.php will certainly lead to lots of speculation. Dan was an interesting, controversial, and difficult to deal with person.
There is some Karmic value to our existence and how we treat others.
Get out there today and be nice to people.
Everyone.
Bring on the conspiracy theories.
Bring on Father Dowling and Sister Steve.
Probably is the work of the jihadis.
It's not a conspiracy-theory. It's what they do; murder infidels.
Mumbai is just one example.
THE RELIGION OF PEACE IS A DANGER TO MANKIND
well, if indymedia hates him, he's okay by me.
robin, i fail to see how standing up for israel = falling down an elevator shaft, karmically. you go ahead and have a great day, though.
If it could happen to Debra Jean Palfrey it can happen to YOU.
Basically no one ever falls down elevator shafts by accident. It's a Hollywood cliche. Elevators are the safest form of transport ever invented by man (look it up). Skullduggery is afoot.
More like equating opposing protesters with suicide bombers = falling down an elevator shaft, karmically.
If this could happen to savvy Rosalind Shays on L.A. Law it could happen to anyone of us. I'm convinced.
Fizzandpop, a 2-year-old fell down a shaft last December. Here. In SF. Not Hollywood.
The strange thing about this is that he fell *down.*
ok, so he got in the elevator and presumably it got stuck. Let's also presume that he tries to get out of the elevator. Considering that elevator cars and elevator shafts are pretty tight, there's very little room between them, let along enough for an adult to squeeze past. So how does he end up under the elevator car to fall to his death?
It sounds like he tried to get fancy and crawl down the side cable or counter-weight tracks or some such. I can understand that. I've been stuck in an elevator for awhile before but not in a situation where likely nobody was responding to the emergency intercom. if these elevators passed inspection, they should have a functioning phone that not only goes directly to building management and/or directly to the fire department.
Something ain't right here.
you're right, withak. every time i notice people standing in support with those who advocate the destruction of israel, i feel like i deserve to fall down an elevator shaft.

Uh, no.
Three questions
1. Did the fire alarm button not work?
2. Was he impatient and watch to many indiana jones movies and try to slide down the cables?
3. Is it darwin award worthy?
Just a reminder that opposing the actions of the Israeli government is not the same as "advocat[ing] the destruction of Israel", SFX and others. You can think it's a great country that can and should succeed and also think that it needs to stop doing stupid and self-destructive things.
None of this addresses the issue at hand, of course. It's damn hard to fall down an elevator shaft. From the Weekly article it seems that he forced his way out of the elevator .. but how did that lead to the fall?
um, have you ever been to an anti-israel protest? they're easy to find. just attend any protest about anything and you will find them. or any event suggesting that israel should continue to exist.
@Aventinus
But two year olds are complete idiots.
@fizzandpop
Oooh, riiight! That makes it okay, then!
I wonder if this incident would garner as much attention if the victim was a Hispanic cleaning lady. Kinda like how the coverage of the attacks in Mumbai focused heavily on the rabbi and his wife...
