What's Going On Here, Katz Bagels?

katz%20bagles.jpg

No, no, no.

No.

Why is this coming down? See, frequent SFist commenter Plumpy (Michael Plump) just sent in this harrowing image, showing the Mission's Katz Bagels big, fake bagel/alien spacecraft being removed this afternoon. In graphic detail Plumpy reports from the scene at 16th Street today.

The gigantic bagel above Katz (yummy) Bagels & (nasty) Pizza came down today. I'm not sure why because the workers were ignoring repeated shouted questions from the small crowd. Instead, they were focusing their efforts on, you know, loading a giant fucking bagel into a pickup truck. I'm an optimist, so I'm just going to assume they're, uh, refurbishing it. Or whatever the term is for cleaning up a over-sized food product.

So. Um. They're just cleaning it, right? Right?! Really, what's happening to all of the signage in the Mission

Update: We attempted to call Katz Bagels, only to be greeted with a phone-disconnection voice recording.

this can't be happening. this is my block. you can't take my hamburger-riding alien. you can't!

Hmm... I'm torn.

Katz was "OK". Waaaaaay better than Posh "Bagel" at 18th/Castro, and still on the way to the train. But Holey Bagel in Noe is so much better than Katz it is worth a detour. Bagel Bakery on Townsend is better than Katz but not as good as Holey, but you have to go through the 4th/Townsend intersection of death to get there. But at least since they changed from Izzy's to Bagel Bakery, the wait time has gone from 15 minutes to an acceptable 2-3 minutes.

Overall? Losing Katz would be a downer, but not a deadly one.

murphstahoe: Well, yeah, all I ever bought in there was an occasional newspaper. I don't really care about the place itself. But I do care about the giant bagel with an alien inexplicably coming out of the top.

Are they going away or is there an other reason?

I remember hearing a news report that anything that sticks out too far from a business' property line has to pay for "air rights" to the city, and that costs money.

House of Bagels is #1 for bagels in Ess Eff

But for the sake of all that is fun and weird, I hope the ugly alien thing returns.

The funniest thing about this thread is people chiming in about the best bagel when they are all exactly the same level of bread-churn garbage. Not that I don't buy them, but they're all the same everywhere in San Francisco. Some don't include salt on their Everything, but that's about it.

Katz actually has a special extra piece of lameness in that they use whipped cream cheese instead of regular. This causes toasted bagels to melt the schmear and run white diarrhea into the wrapper (or your hand) as you bite into it. Fuck 'em, glad they're gone. Cool sign though, I'd say check X-21 for it in about a month.

@ninjakitty, you see this thing everyday and still haven't determined what makes a bagel w/ lox and onions, etc... different from a hamburger?

hmm

@manys there is at least one level of differentiation in SF Bagels. "Can you slice it with a knife, or does it sort of smush in your hand like raw dough".

Posh and Noah's are the primary offenders in this category. Might as well be a piece of wonder bread. I can't figure out how their employees can slice 1000's of those things without taking off many fingers in the process.

What Manys said. If they're gone, it's no loss at all.

Miller's East Coast West on Polk has the bagels you seek.

They're boiled & partially baked in New York before they're shipped overnight to SF. Their lox & cream-cheese schmear is to die for.

To die.

periqueblend: ah, yes, 'tis a bagel with lox, but me and a certain three-year-old like to think of it as a hamburger. i do see things everyday but sometimes like to let my imagination run wild.

@ninjakitty, I wasn't saying anything, I was just sayin is all.

Presumably the burger is going to get installed on the back of a flatbed that some Burner is going to drive around town at every god-damned opportunity while Scott Beale takes pictures?

I hope they're just repairing/reinforcing the sign or taking it down to paint.

=0(

Sad, but I can't really complain since I never went there.

Still, the UFO bagel is a landmark. Will it be attached to a flatbed truck and hauled around the city like the doggy diner signs?

BANNED!

kidding. by why? it's ever so cute!.
