Scene from Today's Yes on 8 Parade In SF

yes%20on%20hate.jpg

We reported on the Yes On 8 truck parade earlier today, but it turns out this protest, if you will, was much more heated and hateful than anticipated. SFist reader Laura, who snapped up this image at noon-ish on Market Street, tells us about her encounter with the anti-gay marriage SUV brigade.

These guys and several other cars are circling Market, yelling at pedestrians. They are jubilant with hatred, if you can picture that. Some of them are dancing up on top of their SUVs like rabid trained monkeys on the loose.

Me: What are you trying to prove in downtown San Francisco?
Them: Fuck you, DYKE! Fuck you faggots!

I am still shaking with anger.

Unacceptable.

Stay safe out there, No On 8-ers. Please.

Update: But, of course, we should point out, said paraders have the right to say what they want. God bless the First Amendment. And God bless America.

Another example of why we need a congestion charge for vehicles entering downtown San Francisco ... oh, and also an example of why we should have the right to carry pistols if we're sane, trained adults ... who's to say these folks aren't looking to physically hurt people?

Way back when, during the Wilson administration, probably when most of you were still sucking pacifiers, there was a gay protest that started in the Castro, and ended up with an assault by a mob on the State Office Building at 455 Golden Gate. The first floor offices that belonged to the Workers' Compensation Appeals Board were set on fire, destroying records and delaying the claims of some injured workers. Also, the stained-glass art entrance, which incidentally had been created by a person of gaity, was totally smashed to smithereens. That's what is unacceptable.

A bunch of morons exercising their first amendment rights and cursing at people may be idiotic, but it pales in comparison to the damage done by violent demonstrators.

The first amendment may leave Laura shaking with anger - but it's there to protect her. Too bad she's so sensitive.

hmm, interesting metaphor choice.

I think we should be happy for this, in case people forget why their vote is so important.

Are those the Dhawali brothers?

Any chance this is a clever ratfuck by anti-prop 8 pranksters?

no, pandaKrusher, because gays don't drive american cars. they're tacky.

atthebeach has it in spades. who cares what idiots say?

Believe the riot incident in question occurred across the street from 455 Golden Gate at 525 Golden Gate. The abandoned building is still there, waiting for windmills or something to go up.

i see your point. but... ignoring them doesn't make them or it go away.

@ JimH - No, it was 455; I worked there. 525 was closed immediately after the '89 earthquake. It's full of asbestos and has to be torn down. There is some talk of selling the property to a private developer. They really don't need another ugly, over-budget state office building like the '98 replacement for 455.

@Brock - First Amendment gives you the right to speak, publish, and ignore. Why should they go away and someone else be allowed to stay?

because life is not fair. alas.

...but i hear what you're saying.

Yuck, get those fuckwits out of my city and back to the hole they crawled out of.

DBTDOC*

No on 8, please.

Ok, atthebeach, so because it doesn't get violent it is ok? Yes, the first amendment is there and I agree everyone should have a voice (so what if idiots come and yell). But do you find it acceptable to use the N word? As a lesbian, I find that the word dyke is just as offensive. She has every right to be shaking with anger and that isn't being too sensitive.

Right after leaving City Hall to vote, I heard the honks and went to the corner to see what the fuss was about. I saw the "yes on 8" signs and my stomach dropped. They made a rude comment to a passing woman bicyclist, and she stopped right in front of the white Ford pick-up truck and wouldn't move. They started getting pissed off, and the driver got out of the truck. We all got closer to make sure he didnt touch her. He (fat, bald, dark skin) starting yelling at her to move out of his way, that she didnt have the right to stop there. She just held the peace sign in his face. Priceless.

Then three more bald-headed goons got out of the truck, and there was a confrontation. Some shoving. Then he yelled at us spectators watching from the corner to "get off the street." While we were standing on the sidewalk. I got pissed, was doing so well at being quiet, and started yelling at him to get back in his truck, that it wasn't his city, that we can stand where we wanted, and that he should just move on. He was all high-and-mighty, acting cool.

The drove away - Escalades, Explorers and Ford trucks. Some fat girls blaring hip-hop and dancing while screaming "Yes on 8" as if they were heading to a rock concert. Pathetic, yet so real.

PS - I am so thankful for those guys coming into our city, because they have rallied us and increased our passion for this. They just achieved the opposite of what they intended - piss us off and make us work/give even more!

No on 8. Its just human.

Wow, the bridge and tunnel crowd is more pathetic than I remember.

Atthebeach, while i appreciate the severity of the events you refer to, I hardly think that is why we should just let the big bullies shout, threaten. intimidate. They almost started an incident that could have gotten very ugly, and who's to say things can't get out of hand and the same sort of horror occur. Whether it's on a grand or small scale, someone's lives are being threanted right in broad daylight, and you say forget it, it was worse in the past?

The same big bullies in big suvs were en masse all over san mateo too. They were from a church. Another good reason not to have church and state mix. Great churches to raise kids in eh?

Tomorrow's gonna be a big day. I don't like our odds. Looks like a coin toss. But I can't shake this good feeling that change is coming.

Quoting Laura: "Me: What are you trying to prove in downtown San Francisco?
Them: Fuck you, DYKE! Fuck you faggots!"

She's the one who initiated the confrontation. She had seen how these fools were acting. She got no more and no less of a response than she should have expected. Similarly, the woman who "stopped right in front of the white Ford pick-up truck and wouldn't move," seems to have been looking for a confrontation.

We must let other people "shout and threaten," because we need to preserve our right to shout for the things we believe in. These things weren't happening in a deserted dark alley, but in broad daylight. If we feel that they "intimidate" us, it is because we lack the strength and dignity to just walk away.

A bunch of yahoos making a lot of noise and acting crudely is hardly a threat. Characterizing them as "big bullies" seems silly - who were they bullying? I don't see them as dangerous or threatening. Some people's willingness to deny them the right to make jackasses of themselves is a grave threat to everyone's liberty, and to my freedom to post rambling comments like this.

In other words, the First Amendment applies to everyone, not just people or ideas that you approve of. Goodnight!

I hate to agree, but atthebeach is right about the free speech bit.

We all have the right to say whatever we damn well please. Whether it's yes or no on 8, we have the right to say it.

They were looking for a confrontation. That's EXACTLY what they were doing in downtown San Francisco.

Sure, they were loud, obnoxious and insulting to some people, which I don't think is proper behavior when you're in public, but it is still allowed.

By confronting them you're reinforcing negative behavior, and giving them exactly what they want, a fight.

yay for free speech!

I don't have to like what you say, but I'll defend to the death your right to say it.

Ignorance is always entertaining.

Look at the past 8 years if you need further proof.

I voted early so I could avoid amateur night.

travin: THANK YOU!
-card carrying member of the ACLU since birth (literally)

ZOMG rly? you're turning this into a free speech issue? how abstractly libertarian of you ... look, if someone's gonna call me a faggot and try to write discrimination against me into the constitution (and give hip-hop a bad name to boot, as well as pollute) I'd ask them what they were up to and stop my damn bike in their face as well.

You're obv not gay -- so what the hell do you know about how it feels to be called a faggot? how long have we had to "just ignore" these people -- how the eff do you think we got as far as all this prop 8 silliness to begin with? Go vote for Barr and then STFU. Comparing us yelling back at some a-holes to some violence that occurred two decades ago is like saying the Western Addition will burn if Obama loses, sheesh. Get a grip.

PS and don't wear such a short skirt if you don't want to get raped.

Thank you Marke. Free speech and intimidating and downright threatening speech are 2 different things.

hate is hate........ just sayin'.....

attthebeach is the only person that typed anything that made any sense
yes on 8.

"You're obv not gay -- so what the hell do you know about how it feels to be called a faggot?"

You obv don't have any straight-but-seems-gay friends.

Hopefully those dumb sh!ts die in a car crash or a heart attack - whatever comes quickest

WHOA!!! WTF??? freedom of speech did you say?? hey .. this spics have no freedom of FUCKING speech... if mine was taken away by these knuckle dragging primates because of hate, then i think we should call the INS ..that or atleast book them to mow my yard for the next few weeks.. I'm making a point right here.. Last night marked HISTORY ...we just voted hundreds of years of racial divide OUT of the ring and then moments later when 8 passed, we threw discrimination back into it but NOW on us and you say these SPICS have a right to speak??? REALLY? i didn't know how that works.. so you are saying it's okay for me to drive to little Mexico and tell them there is a lawn mower sale going on at Target??!? i think i might do that this weekend.. it will be fun...MY POINT IS THIS!!!!! if you represent black, brown, female, who have overcome hate and discrimination in this country then you are a hypocrite standing on that car yelling "FAGGOT!" So to me you are no better than a blue gummed nigger or a greasy, smelly spic, or a fat-barefoot-pregnant-stay in the kitchen bitch! I hope my point has been made clearly and with the gloves off... let me say this to all of you 8 haters... i pack a nine.. i am one faggot if you pull that shit on me in MY neighbourhood of the Castro then i will empty my chamber into your sorry ass and then you will see who the faggot is BITCH!!! this is SAN FRANCISCO!!! not fucking Arkansas... keep your hate celebrations to yourself and you might not get your ass kicked by me.. because BITCH i can go from drag queen to black belt in 2 seconds and then there will be problems! GO OBAMA!!!!!!! get us out of this mess please/!?!!!?!?!?!?

Gay Marriage is not about Civil rights its about “Special Rights”

The No on 8 people continually try to claim this is a “civil rights” issue similar to the struggles of the minorities in the latter half of the 20 century, it is nothing of the sort.
As a minority I was born a specific class of people whose rights were being denied. I did not Choose to be born this way and I cannot change my skin color or heritage even if I wanted to, and herein lies the difference, the homosexual’s has “Chosen” this type of lifestyle and can choose to change it, (unlike those of us born a minority or handicapped)
Some in their community haven’t decided (bi-sexual) but it is still a choice.
They made a “Choice” to live a certain lifestyle and now want us to grant them “Special Rights” claiming we are unfair, and are trying to use the Equal Protection clause as an excuse, this section does not apply to “Choice” it applies to those denied their rights, through no decision/choice of their own (minorities, handicapped down syndrome etc) and cannot change it.
The No on 8 people want us to grant them a “special right” Not a Civil Right since that is Not what this, and in doing so we now, who have not made that lifestyle choice would become a discriminated class and to quote Senator Findstein “discrimination is wrong”.
Additionally the No on 8 people claimed this had nothing to do about religion, then why are they protesting the Mormon Church, they excised their “freedom of religion” and for that because they, and the rest of mainstream society (with Yes on 8 winning) have exercised our Freedom of Speech, now we are wrong!? So does that mean tolerance is ok as long as you agree with “their Lifestyle Choice”? but to disagree is Intolerance, they just showed what they claimed in their commercials it had nothing to do with
Lastly giving if we do give them this “Special Right” then we need to remove the domestic partnership and civil union laws and require them as the rest of the heterosexual community to either marry or do not claim these other special privileges (or grant them to the rest of society). If we do not repeal these laws then I as a heterosexual become discriminated against, because if I live with my girlfriend and we are not a same sex couple, neither one of us can claim the benefits or rights of the other as the homosexuals can, and that again is what Senator Fiendstein claimed she was against “discrimination” and this would be discrimination in its highest form against all heterosexual society.
No on 8 is not about civil rights, its about “special rights” and choice.
I did not Choose to be born a minority, but they can choose a lifestyle
I cannot choose, they can. Choice should not be given a “special right” as they can choose to change.
A great example is Anne Heche, she chose to be a lesbian, now she has Chosen to be Heterosexual, she is a perfect example of this type of Choice
No to Special Rights and
Yes to Traditional Families and true civil rights to those who have No Choice

talkpit, Hell is over that way. Go there now.
