According to a handy zip-code-searching tool at the Chron, about 200 San Franciscans have stuck their noses into their neighbors' marriages by giving money to the anti-marriage campaign. Voting to end your neighbor's marriage? That's messed up. But here's what's even messier: less than 9,000 San Franciscans have donated to No On 8. Seriously, folks? How much easier could it be, especially now that they're matching donations?
And it's not just individuals; four SF companies have have launched attacks on local families, too:
- Blackford Construction gave $200
- Visionary Electronics gave $99
- Large Format Computing gave $1500
- Malta and Co, located in the Richmond, gave $100 (and Elena Malta gave another $100)
Malta and Co already seems to be suffering a bit of Yelp-retribution for its anti-marriage stance. Of course, these people and companies might object to their donations being made the subject of scrutiny -- and we can certainly understand that. It must be simply awful to have strangers involving themselves in your private life. To have people you don't even know talking about your values and personal decisions -- why, that must feel simply dreadful.
Is this conversation sort of like how the Yes On 8 campaign threatened to publish the names of donors to marriage equality? Well, yes. Yes, it is. Thanks for the idea!
Disclosure: SFist_Matt is working on a stop-prop-8 project.

Thanks for pointing out the hidden boobies in the Yes-on-8 logo.
It's good to know which places to avoid. Unfortunately, I had to quit frequenting my favorite coffee bean purveyor after I heard the owner defending his donations to the McCain campaign to another customer.
Only three people in my zip code. One of whom went to Brigham Young University, go figure, he gave a whopping $2K.
I wholly endorse not supporting businesses that favor discrimination. Thankfully, that applies to no one in 94103 (holla!). However, I believe the Chron tool doesn't report anyone who gave less than $50, so there could be some bigots lurking anonymously.
Should the headline read No on 8?
Wait a minute - shouldn't that headline read "Only 8,444 of you Have Donated to *NO* on 8." We want 8 to fail, not pass!
Yes, I believe it should read No on 8. For a moment, I was a little taken aback that sfist is encouraging Yes on 8. Might want to fix the headline.
Good christ, this thing is confusing. I can't believe I fucked up the headline. Sorry about that! Fixed! Thanks for the heads-up.
When I look up SF as a whole the 5th person down on the list, a $1000 contributor, is a Mr. Jonathon Gay. He brings new meaning to "self-hating gay!"
Wait a minute! I gave $150 online (so you'd think there wouldn't be a spelling/typo issue) to No on 8 but I'm not in the database. Has this happened to anybody else? Might cast doubt on the data.
yikes, thanks for the fix matty
Hmm, if I'm in need of another crown, I'll know who to avoid in my 'hood...
i'm hella poor. livin' on $7/day for the next two weeks. i looked up my boss, though, and he apparently gave a few hundred to NOon8! w00t.
@ xine_94110: The database isn't updated daily. Donations have to be reported to the Secretary of State first and it can take a few days to show up. My donations from August, September and the first part of this month show up, but not my donations from this past week.
Yesterday I found out which extended family members gave to Yes on 8. They're all getting phone calls from me this weekend. The nerve...
Same here xine_94110 -- I made 2 separate donations, and only one showed up. The database has flaws.
Only one asshole in my 94105 zip code contributing to the protectmarriage haters .. Mrs. Susan Hansen, Homemaker, total of $165, 94105-3080 (which appears to be 525 Howard Street ... is that really a home address?? that's the address for the former Club NV .... anyway ... the bitch.
there are only two ultra-bigots in the 94102! huzzah!
Oh ... and I coughed up a total of $1200 for Equality California and the Equality for All campaigns - and trust me, I qualified for the Mayor's Office of Housing assistance program, I'm no rich boy despite what some assholes keep spreading as the stereotype of Rincon Hill residents.
I donated a chunk quite a while back and my name doesn't show up. Grr.
It's possible that your name might not show up because of the complex multi-organizational structure of the No-On-8 campaign. For example, if you gave to the campaign indirectly, via EQCA or NCLR, you might not show up on the "official" list.
Only 8 people in my zip contributed to the EVIL side, as against 818 for the GOOD side.
Well, make that at least 819, because my contribution hasn't shown up yet either.
RinconHIllSF: yeahh that housing program is awesome. i'm trying to save up money for a deposit. if you make than ~65,000/yr (or more for families) you can get a sweet deal on a home in SF! look it up, folks: "inclusionary housing."
Done.
And 17 supporters in the 94123...why does this not surprise me? Fucking douchebags.
Kicked in another $100 ... hate the thought of Mormons shoving their discrimination into California's Constitution
One person back home in my crappy little redneck town actually gave money to oppose it. I must find her when I go home for the holidays and buy her a drink.
15 pro 8 people in my zip code and 232 against. Not bad.
I've given twice, a month ago and yesterday, and neither one shows up in the database. However, I've scoured the list and found quite a few fabulous LGBT celebs and straight allies who've made big contributions to No on 8. Donating $100K: Ellen DeGeneres, T.R. Knight, Brad Pitt, Steven Spielberg/Kate Capshaw. $50K: George Lucas, Fall Out Boy. $40K: David Hyde Pierce. $25K: Barbra Streisand. $15K: Tracy Chapman, Tony Kushner. $10K: Suze Orman, Tobey Maguire, Anne Hathaway, Jon Cryer. $5K+: Linda Perry, Christopher Rice, Dana Delany, Eric McCormack, Chelsea Handler, Alan Alda. $2,500+: George Takei, Mary McCormack, Martina Navratilova, Neil Patrick Harris, Gus Van Sant, Wanda Sykes.
Barbra Streisand only donated $15K?? For shame.
A couple contributors in 94122: "Woods Woolwine III" and "Miss Christin Creighton." Are these real people? No, really, do these people exist?!?
Oh, and there were about 14 donations in support out there (about a third of those from a Carl Orr), and about 230 against.
In my zip code (94131): Eight people donated to Yes on 8; 818 donated to No on 8.
Diamond Heights is so gay.
Hmmm...Equality for All hit my credit card on the 18th but I'm not showing up in the search tool.
My contribution hasn't shown up yet, either.
I got a lovely mailer today from from Yes On 8 people featuring Obama's anti-gay marriage quotes.
Most importantly, VOTE!
Yes, Obama's going to win California. You still have to vote against 8. If you're going to be busy Tuesday, you can go to City Hall and vote early. It's open all weekend. VOTE! VOTEVOTEVOTE
I've donated over $300 (in various increments) over the past 60 days to No on (H)8 and my name does not appear in the database.
This is the mailer we got today. We live in the Bayview.

Quote from back side "A person's skin color is completely different than someone's sexual practices, same sex marriages are in no way comparable to the black experience for civil rights." Bishop Donald E. Green San Francisco Christian Center
At least no one in 94124 is on the list as having donated to the "Yes on 8" - I guess we are too poor.
I donated $300 for yes on 8.
you're donating for a losing cause =)
I have given over $100 but am not on the list. I also made sure to put "No on 8" info on my wedding invitations last month, post yard signs in front of the chappel on Treasure Island, and am posting my yard sign as well.
My friends are donating, but because they give less than $100 at one time they are not showing up :( I love my freinds!
COP - The losing cause is religious persecution. Vote NO on (H)8!
but persecuting people for voting yes on 8 is good right?
yes on 8 soon you will see who was right, clown
They're still in need of donations at http://www.noonprop8.com ... no regrets on Wednesday, November 5th! Do ALL that you can now!
I gave money to the No on 8 campaign but don't see my name. :(
I am seeing a yes on 8 add on Socketsite,
http://www.socketsite.com/
Like the only non real estate add I have ever seen there.
sucks.
I checked the chronicle site and could not find my contribution or my spouse's contribution to NO ON 8 so that's two there that didn't get counted. We each received confirmation emails from NO ON 8 acknowledging our donations, but not having found it on the Chronicle site, we called NO ON 8 and we were assured that it was received but not posted. I'm hoping this also explains the relatively low number of donations.
Boycott all you like...You make it sound like that's gonna change people's minds...HA! Sounds like a protection racket to me..."Vote my way or you won't do business in this town"...Isn't that the typical street thug mentality? You people crack me up...Cheering and celebrating when 1 Judge overturns the will of over 60% of the people in California but whining when that same majority beats you again and trumps you...If you don't like how it turned out then get the hell out of California and move to a state where the majority thinks it's OK for gays to marry...California's people obviously don't want it here...
We are the owner's of Malta & Co and realize that some reviews posted on yelp and other similar websites such as this one are simply not true. Our office is not in any legal dispute regarding an issue for "incorrect billing" as one review states. Most of the negative comments posted are likely attributed to other comments posted about our company and Prop 8. For the record, you will notice that as of 11/14/08 Malta & Co does NOT appear on the hrc.org list as supporters of Prop 8, as they too have corrected and have acknowledged the mistake that has been explained here on Yelp as to what happened. Here is the link for you to refer to: http://www.hrc.org/new...; We appreciate honest reviews & comments-- good or bad-- but not bogus ones. We understand that Proposition 8 is a passionate issue. We do not support discrimination and strongly believe in equal rights for all. http://www.hrc.org/new...
Malta & Co., Inc. is a real estate sales and property management company operated by our family in San Francisco, since 1975. In May of 2008 our mother, who is the office bookkeeper, erroneously made a donation to the Yes on 8 Campaign, pursuant to a request by a family member who is gay. My mother made a personal $100.000 donation, as well as a $100.00 donation in our company name to the Yes on 8 Campaign, believing at that time a "Yes" vote meant we were preserving marriage rights for all Californians. We started receiving calls a day before the election from No on 8 supporters, and my mother realized her mistake. We immediately made a donation for $200.00 to "No on 8", but that will not take our company off of the Yes on 8 donation list. We also believe that many voters who voted well in advance of the last minute campaigning were confused and erroneously voted yes, just as my mother erroneously donated to the yes campaign early on. Since the Yes on 8 campaign will not refund us our money, we shall regrettably remain on their list of supporters, and we sincerely apologize, as it was NOT our intention to support discrimination, as people that know us first-hand are aware. Malta & Co. Inc. does not support Proposition 8 and strongly believes in equal rights for all. Sincerely, Debra Malta & Vince Malta
