Tonayense Troubles?

tona.jpgOur new favorite taco-truck defense blog, Burrito Justice, calls our attention to an Eater SF post we somehow missed: the heat at the Tonayense truck at 20th and Harrison is coming not just from the grill, but also from a parent's group concerned about the truck's proximity to John O'Connell High School of Technology. Apparently, the truck threatens the health of the students.

Although the judicial system has stepped in to help the beleaguered taco trucks of Los Angeles County, who will stand up for El Toñayense when the "wellness" of children is supposedly on the line? To us, this just seems like Footloose all over again: a small-minded crusade against exuberance and joy.

SFWeekly's Meredith Brody recently had this to say about our favorite taco truck: "There are no better tacos, burritos, tortas, and quesadillas available anywhere in the Mission than those served up at one of El Tonayense's three immaculate trucks strung out along Harrison like the pearls they are."

What high school cafeteria can compete with that?

I would be willing to volunteer in any capacity possible to remake Footloose as a taco truck struggle.

oh good I can continue my anti-parent rant from yesterday. Maybe you should try parenting you little twat of a kid rather than fucking with everyone else? Waaaahh! Little Ethan went near a burrito! Ban them! Fucking badly dressed, no-life-having, ass-draggers.

You people have got to fucking be kidding me. Your kid lets you off the lunchmaking hook and you bitch and moan? How could the SFUSD (i.e., lowest bidder scenario) possibly provide higher quality food than the free market?

when white people can't get their burritos, all hell will break loose ...

Next to my school we had an open prison, a secure mental facility, a meat rendering plant and a brewery. 'Never did me any harm. Why are modern parents such unbelievable pussies?

Actually, as good as the food from the Tonayense trucks is, you can get even better versions of your favorites at their brick & mortar location at 24th & Shotwell.

Isn't it obvious? Tacos cause child molestation, just like fishes cause bicycles.

@fizzandpop

LULLLLZZZ!!

But can you trust the judgment of the SF Weekly's Meredith Brody? If she has any taco expertise, she hides it very well, as she hasn't reviewed a Mexican place (and I mean a real one, not tres agaves) or a place in the Mission in years!

i kind of doubt its about the wellness of the students, El Faro is right next to the school..although it is far inferior to El Tonayense.

John O'Connell High School has more kids walking from it than toward it in the morning. Those parents need to be more concerned about their kids being at school that at a yummy taco truck. As the parent of a high school kid in San Francisco, I'd like to tell those "concerned" parents to stop worrying about taco trucks and stat worrying the Sureños and the Norteños recruiting out of Mission area High Schools and Middle Schools.

Don't lump all parents in with the ninnies complaining about a damn taco truck. I'd prefer my kid eat from the taco truck than the HFCS crap that comes from the local corner store any day.

Besides, as one who has found numerous junk food containers squirreled away in the most bizarre places, I've learned if there's one thing you cannot control, it's your teenager's eating habits when he's out of your sight.

This is the rabble. We need witches to burn and aristocrats to behead.

bluecanary, what the hell are you thinking? There's nothing wrong with HFCS. The recent eye-opening tv ad with the uptight old white lady being schooled by the hippie, all-knowing matrix-ish black matron says so. Duh! Hello?!?

Ooh,ooh, can we also burn/behead the parents who let their spawn run screaming through the restaurants?

carne asada is not a crime.

taco bell's grande soft tacos are wildly underrated. see, it's a taco dripping in orange nacho cheese sauce.

mmmm.

Unhealthy?! FRESH homecooked (well, truck cooked) Mexican cuisine is ANYTHING BUT. Parents should advise their kids to go to the taco truck and PAY ATTENTION.

aj, It's just racism on the downlow. those dirty brown people couldn't possibly serve clean healthy food. Only Rosarita knows a better way.

"If I knew you were coming I would have made La Choy!"

@MisterPlow

correction:

when white people can't get their burritos, all HECK will break loose...

It's "Heck", not that place where the devil lives.

Proper white people do not use foul language in mixed company.

And besides, what the fuck was Meredith Brody doing at a taco truck? There's no wine list, no ambiance to fuss over and definitely no way to wax poetically about her many travels to France.

:p

More on the "Taco Troubles", thanks to the Berkeley J-School.
