Double Your Lapu

Hey, did you know that we have a Lapu Lapu Street? It's true! Between 3rd and 4th on Harrison. What a crazy name! It's ethnic or something. (Also: is that a little hedge maze a block north of it? That seems pretty.)

Anyway, we thought you might like to know that City Car Share just installed a new pod there on the Lapus. The parking spaces are indoors, which is probably wise, Chris Daly's district being what it is. Godspeed, Laputians!

UPDATE: One of the sentences in this post insinuates that 16th-century inhabitants of the Philippines had an ethnicity, an insinuation at which some commenters (one) take offense. SFist regrets the error.

The dude killed Magellan. Come on man, he's a Filipino hero!

Appears to be a Pinoy block. Lapu Lapu, Rizal, Bonifacio and Mabini. All Philippine heroes.

So what does James lick again?

er...if you poked around the area a bit you'd notice the Filipino Education Center along with a large number of Filipino families living in the area, usually rundown old alleyway edwardians not the new fancy condo lofts.

If you were being cheeky by saying "ethnic", it didn't quite come across well. As an offended minority (we're a sensitive lot here), please be a little more careful in your writing as this community has been in a constant battle with the economic forces of San Francisco. The street names were given to give a historically oppressed community some pride in a place that they lived.

A bit lazy with the wiki link I'd say. Sorry to be harsh but I'm just offended by a blog that claims to be SF and people don't respect it's history.

For other classic development battles, please see the recent Japantown post. Man I'm pretty disgusted, can SFIST take this post down?? This is worse than reading a Yelp review. I'm just trying to think of other ways to tell you you suck. Please feel free to rebut.

"Hedge maze" is actually a community garden. Still kinda nice to sit in.

Hey, that Teddy Roosevelt was a great president, yeah?

jondis, you have provided me with much hilarity this evening. sheer genius.

More than two offended if more were to read this, as Fil-Ams are the second largest Asian group in the States, with plenty of history (that includes institutionalized racism) in bay area.

SOMA has traditionally been pinoy for many decades. So don't be hatin', we done just as bad or worse by them as we did with native americans.

You know that one scene in the movie Swingers where the guys are goofin off in thier apartment making Wayne Gretzky's head bleed, where the delivery guy is at the door and Vince Vaughn's character, Trent, jokingly shouts at Jon Favreau's character askin if the delivery guy was brown? You know that scene? Yeah, you know that scene. Well, sometimes, our lovely editor at SFist is Trent. Funny, snarky, and deliberately, childishly a dick. Sometimes he forgets that while it's funny to piss on a prince, it's not so funny when you piss on a peasant. *and this is where everyone jokes about how they love urinating on thier local bum.

Movin right along...remember back in the mid-90's when Filipino kids would wear those Pinoy Pride t-shirts with a buff ass Lapu Lapu? No? Well I do, and they were awesome.

Unwitty, offensive, and uneducated. Thanks for the insensitive non-apology too, dick.

Looking at pics of Lapu Lapu, it strikes me how much he resembles native americans.

In spite of any cultural insensitivity, these streets are a great place to test ride a bike from Pac Bikes.

No traffic!

i don't even get the point of this post. who didn't know these streets existed?

and i found it to be extremely offensive as well. i'm very disappointed in the quality of sfist recently. i doubt this writer is even from san francisco. and if he is, it's a shame.

OMG, mattymatt, you implied that all Pilipinos are crazy and ethnic and live in questionable neighborhoods! Or something. Right?

I registered just to leave this--my first--comment on SFist.

After catching up on about three weeks of unread SFist posts in my RSS newsfeed, I can now honestly say that SFist has sucked recently... And this post tops it off: I'm really disheartened.

Some statistics show that Pilipino Americans are the fastest-growing Asian group in the United States. Another suggests that one in five Pilipinos choose to live in the San Francisco Bay Area. Yes, the demographic is *huge*, and it's unfortunate that AdSense/Analytics/fill in whatever you use for demographic data gathering either (1) isn't picking that up, (2) you don't pay for detailed reporting, or (3) hasn't been configured by you [Gothamist] to report this.

SFist, get your act together--either hire writers who are more educated (and necessarily more "sensitive" to the audience they write for), or get with the program: hire writers who accurately reflect the community they purport to represent.
