SFist sources tell us that the bomb squad has been called to Golden Gate Park at JFK and 30th Avenue Carl Street in Cole Valley at around 6 p.m. Now, which one of you accidentally left your pack back in the park? But seriously, folks, we're not sure what the entire story is yet, or if there even is one, but we'll update when we know more. Stay tuned.

Update 6:56 p.m.: Well, we're not sure what's going on exactly. Some people on NJudahChron are saying they heard it was a shooting, that's a "man cleaning out his garage found an old WWII mortar shell" (another one? Jesus fucking Christ, old men. Seriously. Get rid of that shit, will ya? Or call someone who can take care of it for you), or...who knows.

Update: 7 p.m.: Ah, the real news knows what's up. According to KGO, "Residents have said they have heard that a mortar shell was discovered inside an apartment, but this has not been confirmed by San Francisco police. Officials have rolled out a remote-controlled bomb robot." No confirmation? Then by all means, readers, go ahead and make wild assumptions until we know for sure! (But, please, stay out of the Carl Street/Cole Valley area for now.)

Update: 7:03: Jim Herd, who told us about the bomb squad, snapped up this shot of it all going down. (Really, Herd is a San Francisco treasure. He's everywhere all at once.) Also, yeah, it was a mortor. Jim tells us "they picked up the mortar at 200 Cole and then went on a caravan." What a way to kick off the 4th, eh? Eh? Eh?

we were sitting in traffic at steiner and carl. the activity was at a house on carl about a block down from steiner. the bomb squad trucks, accompanied by a cadre of sfpd and sffd vehicles left the scene and were escorted down stanyon, onto oak/fell, and then into the park via jfk drive. from there they made their way out to wherever they are now (30th?). the escort was all code, and they had motorcycle cops blocking every intersection along the way saying "go inside, you don't want to be here"...

sorry, by steiner i meant stanyan.

Party at the bomb disposal range! I'm bringing the beer!

So let me get this straight. Some guy found a WWII morter that's been sitting around in a garage for 6 years and all of a sudden it's an emergency but people are killing themselves in record numbers in this town but let's shrug our shoulders and say, "well, what can ya do?"

Is this sudden morter shell emergency just the authorities version of throwing a drunken orgy to impress the neighbors?

60 years, I meant.

See, if you parked your car in your garage instead of hoarding crap in it this would never have happened.

I was trying to catch an N at Carl & Cole about 5:45 - there was a lot of confusion, an N train going nowhere and about a hundred people standing around in the street. Glad it didn't go off.

The big bomb squad vehicle, which sort of looks like a blacker, more futuristic fire truck also went past my apartment yesterday morning, and clearly has the scariest siren in town.

Hmm, I suppose this was still occurring yesterday after the Jazz Festival ended too? Couldn't catch the 28.
