Oh my, word. Did you hear it? We received a few emails mentioning it, but NBC 11 confirms:
"As of 4:10 p.m., PG & E activity in the vicinity of California and Drumm streets is disrupting regular cable car service on the California line," read a Muni alert. "Service will be provided by bus shuttles. The 1-California and the 41-Union are switching back at Clay and Drumm streets in both directions. Muni Metro service is not affected."
But that's not the scary part. This is:
This is near the Embarcadero Center, ACLU and Walgreens. There is also a large Wells Fargo branch in the area.
Not Walgreens! Even if it is the not-so-nice Walgreen, which it is, it still pains us deeply. Yuo see, know Walgreens, know peace; no Walgreens, no peace. Anyway, no one was hurt during the underground blast, but the Hyatt was rattled. Details to come.
Update: Here's a shot of the scene just after the explosion. Also, is that Chu standing there? It is! Looks like the ban has been lifted. Happy now?

Heard it from Embarcadero 2. Not seeing any mayhem in the streets out there or anything. Ho-hum.
Felt and heard a couple of big explosive noises ... manhole in the street was no longer covered and black smoke was coming out of it .. they've since covered it up. Drumm and California ... (shrug) life goes on (unless you'd planned on riding the California cable car line - you're going to have to make due with a regular bus)
TERRORISTS!!!!!!!
PG&E are terrorists. And every time we recharge our nasal hair trimmers, they have won.
Gathered around the roped-off area by the hotel are the undefeatable You-Know-Who with sign, our rename-the-sewer-plant friends, and three adorable high schoolers gathering signatures to keep JROTC in SF. Another half hour and maybe we'd see the parrot-not-quail folks!
Heard it from EBC1, scared the shit out of me.
Walgreens sucks ass. Longs is far better. Why? You can buy booze at Longs.
The closest Longs is in Daly City. Walgreens may suck but Longs is far... away in another land.
Well, okay. That's probably a good reason to start drinking though.
Frank has a sense of News. He gets there when/where there is some.
So was this caused by the same thing that blew up in front of the Ralph Lauren on Kearny a couple years ago? I remember people screeching "terrist!" back then also but alas it was actually PG&E cutting corners again.
Tomato, tomahto.
Yeah, I heard it at Sacramento and Montgomery. And of course, no one in my office even blinked, just kept droning on, even though it sounded like a bomb had gone off.
I'm certainly glad we haven't switched to public power. PG&E has proven so good at providing safe, efficient service.
CHU!
that's Mr. Chu to you, punk
I look forward to when SF fires PG&E and promotes all those MUNI managers and entitlement employees to work with electricity!
I defend PG&E, if stuff doesn't blow up and catch on fire, how will they know it needs to me fixed?
brock,
why don't you guys hire frank. give him a video camera and have exclusive rights to his posts here on sfist.
that would rock!
