UPDATE: Muni Comes to a Halt After West Portal Tunnel Assault

west%20portal%20tunnel.jpg

We heard word that Muni was a buit sluggish this morning, but we had no idea why. That is, until we received this in our inbox.

So I'm waiting at the Castro MUNI station this morning about 10am. And I'm waiting. And Waiting. Finally one of the someone comes down and tells us that someone has driven into the tunnel at West Portal and all inbound and outbound trains are stopped. Un-freaking-believeable!

SF Weekly confirms this as well. The accident caused our fine public transit system to "halt in service in both directions."

Also: heh. Why? Because, it seems, this isn't the first time someone has idiotically tried to drive through the West Portal tunnel. What a coincidence: just last April, a sloshed guy also tried crusing down the tunnel. Who made it "further into the tunnel than anyone that [Muni operatives] can remember." Why is this tunnel so tempting?

Update: According to 511, "service restored between Castro & West Portal," but "metro subway service has been restored between Castro and West Portal stations. There may be residual delays."

And don't forget the guy who drove his prius into the N Judah tunnel a while ago.

It's so funny how Muni's own TroubleAlert never tells you about these when they happen - only when they clear 'em up.

I just wonder how stupid one has to be to get a driver's license these days. I mean, what MORON would drive into the West Portal tunnel? There's untold ways that tunnel says "don't drive in here, moron!"

The entrance of the tunnel has those big metal spikes that shred rubber.

I doubt that he got far- maybe to forest hill if that?

Funny, the driver didn't notice the "severe tire damage" notice at the tunnel entrance.

I plan on cruising under twin peaks in a hovercraft. Who's with me?

The Prius in question went into the West Portal of the _Sunset_ Tunnel. Today's Prius driver (just guessing) drove in the West Portal of the Twin Peaks Tunnel in West Portal.

i saw Coit Tower having sex with the Broadway Tunnel once.

Anyone stupid enough to drive into a Muni tunnel needs to be rounded up and their driver license confiscated for eternity. Clearly they are roadway menaces.

Severe tire damage? I noticed my car was hard to steer! And it wasn't just the dead pedestrians jammed in the mechanism!

Forget taking away her driver's license -- this sort of stupidity calls for euthanasia.

Can't they just yank the damn thing out and get the trains rolling? They don't have to spank the driver in situ, they can give him his Louima behind the ticket booth. OH, BUT HE MIGHT BE A TERRORIST, BETTER CHECK EVERYTHING OUT FOR AN HOUR OR TWO. Jeez, just get the trains rolling. I doubt taking down one or two MUNI lines occupies the top of Al Qaeda's to-do list.

Ha ha, on top of that take a peek at Terry McSweeney's write up of the April event at the ABC site. My 8 year old niece writes better than this:

"A little bit before 2:00 am this morning, a car entered the West Portal Muni tunnel. It is a tunnel that is used just for trains. Luckily the rail line doesn't run in the middle of the night. Police say the man tried to run away, but they caught him. The suspect's Nissan Maxima was towed out of the tunnel."

I nominate him/her for whatever the journamalism award is in that other thread.

What the fuck? TWO AYE EM? The tunnel was still closed at ~10a this morning. As usual MUNI did a piss poor job of handling the situation (e.g. no shuttle buses, station agents spouting off WRONG information, idiot train drivers refusing to offload passengers, etc, etc).

Does this idiot get to keep his car? It should be confiscated and given away to the Muni employee of the month.
