Welcome, Fair-Weather Commuters
We were there through the bitter season--the mud, the rain, the cold, the mid-afternoon sunsets. With dripping, grime-streaked rain gear covering our heels and neckties, we rode our rusting, filthy commuter bikes to the Caltrain station all through the winter, a sweaty, soggy bunch, smelling of mildew and Tri-Flow.
And now, with the arrival of the easy, sunny days of spring, you’ve joined us. And we’re happy to see you, really. It’s Bike to Work Month, after all, and the more the merrier, right? The more the safer, that’s for sure: in spite of what the Chronicle says with their silly “database,” the studies show that the more cyclists mean fewer accidents and fewer injuries. (Attorney Bob Mionske debunks the Chron's piece here and public health consultant Peter Lyndon Jacobsen's peer-reviewed article "Safety in Numbers" can be found here).
So we’re glad to see you, thanks for joining us. Your shiny new bike and broad smile are welcome among the worn faces and thousand-yard-stares of the Caltrain bike car. But it’s three times this week that our morning train has left San Francisco without us--“we’re full on bikes!” was the apologetic cry of the conductor.
It would be easy to hate you, to wish that you would go back to your car so that we could board the Caltrain at the last minute, just as we did all winter. You’re right there, taking our spot. The ones who really decide our fate, faceless bureaucrats of Caltrain, are invisible to us (I bet they drive to work at the “Caltrain Brain” in San Carlos).
But it’s Bike to Work Month. So join us. But buy a folding bike--the current rules say that folding bikes can board even if the bike car is full.

or just move to SF
"We were there through the bitter season--the mud, the rain, the cold, the mid-afternoon sunsets. With dripping, grime-streaked rain gear covering our heels and neckties..."
And that type of weather was for how many days this past winter? Three?
I'm just saying, we're in drought territory this summer.
this is a lot like rainy days on bart or muni, when the noobies come in with their wide eyes and gargantuan backpacks.
fyi...

This can be an excellent way to get notice out when 2 bike cars are available. Right now, only the actual users are transmitting messages - so it's probably only good for people from Potrero Hill so they can figure out if they should bother riding to 22nd St. But maybe... just MAYBE... we can get it going such that Caltrain Dispatch can send out messages 30 minutes ahead of time notifying which trains will have 2 bike cars, allowing us to self select.
This would have great benefit to Caltrain at places like 22nd, Palo Alto, and Mountain View as if we know ahead of time that 2 bike cars are available, we can sort to the 2nd spot and dwell times can be reduced. Caltrain's on time performance is slipping badly lately - the 8:44 from SF is typically 5 minutes behind by Mountain View, which delays the 8:59 bullet as well.
I'm lucky enough as a young 'un to live and work in SF. Occasionally, though, I have to travel around, and the other day I had to ride Caltrain down and back to San Jose (with my bike, of course).
I was moved by the spectacle of eager commuters boarding Caltrain all the way back to SF at every stop. Of course, when Mountain View and Menlo Park came along, it being rush hour, the bike car was swamped. I watched forlorn faces rush by the windows. It was then I praised God for getting to work where I live and not having to commute on Caltrain daily with my bike.
