Buzz-Killing UCSC Officials Puts the Kibosh on 4/20

college_kresge.jpg

Perhaps due to the many squares of acid or complete the lack of sex, we don't remember UC Santa Cruz demigods coming down so hard on 4/20. But SFBG's crusty-but-benign (and victorious!) Bruce Brugman has word that UCSC officials have pulled a Bevan Dufty, more or less shutting down the campus this Sunday, 4/20, on the sacred day where people get baked. Really, really, reeeeeaaally baked.

University of Santa Cruz Executive Chancellor David Kilger's just-say-no letter to students after the jump.

Re: "4-20" Activity

April 20th (4-20) has become known nationwide as the date when people gather to communally smoke marijuana in an expression of support for the reform of marijuana laws. In recent years, thousands of people have gathered on the UCSC campus to participate in this event.

The University does not condone, support or otherwise sanction this event. The increasingly large crowds that have gathered in recent years present safety risks for participants, whether students or people not affiliated with the campus. This activity also violates a number of campus regulations designed to provide for the well-being of our campus and neighboring community.

In anticipation of this year's April 20 activity, I have authorized the implementation of a number of restrictions for this coming weekend, April 19-20. This communication is intended to alert the community of the transportation changes, parking restrictions, and other actions that will limit access to campus.

This advance notification is provided to enable those who have valid reasons for coming to campus this weekend to adjust their schedules and transportation plans accordingly:

o The West Entrance to campus will be closed to inbound vehicular traffic on Sunday.

o The Main Entrance will be open that day, but campus personnel will restrict vehicular access to people who have UCSC parking permits or who can show evidence they are attending sanctioned campus events that day.

o Parking permits will be required in all campus lots throughout the weekend, even in those that typically require no permits on weekends. The parking restriction will include evening hours on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights. (If you need to park on campus this weekend and do not currently have a permit, you will need to purchase one by 6 p.m. on Friday.)

o At our request Metro bus drivers will not bring riders onto campus on Sunday. The only "campus" stop, coming to and from UCSC, will be the one adjacent to the Main Entrance on Empire Grade. (If disability transportation is needed as a result of this restriction, special van service on campus can be requested at this one bus stop.)

o There will be no on-campus shuttle service during the day on Sunday.

o Empire Grade will be designated as a tow-away zone, and vehicles that illegally park on Empire Grade during the weekend will be ticketed and may be towed at the owners' expense. Extra patrols will be on duty to enforce these restrictions.

o Drivers and passengers who can't prove that they have a legitimate reason to be on campus on Sunday will be turned away at the main gate. People can anticipate that there will be delays at the Main Entrance's kiosk.

Please remember that all UCSC students, staff and their guests are expected to comply with University policy and federal and state law.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

Holy fack, that's some nazi shit right there...

Yon bastards! (but this time my tounge is not in cheek) What the hell? Was there a near-miss last year having to do with an M&M fight?

I guess they mean it.

Well, there goes my weekend. Anyone want to hang out in Golden Gate Park?

As a slug alumni, I'm appalled. I also doubt it will deter any students from getting hella stoned, but the lockdown attitude will probably induce a lot of paranoia. I knew this shit would happen once they got rid of narrative evals....

that's right! they got rid of evals. that was my main reason for even going there.

A girl I knew back in the day is now an Alumni of Santa Cruz state as well as the guy she married................

Go Bannana Slugs go !!!!!!!!!!!

ps. no hard feelings, just glad they are happy

if I was ' Hyde' , lets bake those brownies

oh I forgot... one word ' Puffballs'

For the love of God.

Have they no self awareness? At all?

It's UC SANTA CRUZ. What, is marijuana is going to ruin their reputation?

Christ.

Could I get it in a tasty lollipop?

But officer their just ' Puffballs '

Dang California Green and now I just can't get ' Puff the Magic Dragon' out of my head..

Dang childhood memories......

he,he

There is no such thing as a tasty pot lollipop.

quite a few people in and around SF politics are UCSC grads...can anyone name a few?

haven't been back to the old school since like, 1993. I hear it's quite different now.

john laird ('72)
mark sanchez ('87 & '93)

...at least those are the only two listed on my queer alumni party invite. (happening on 5/6, 6pm-8pm, at the war memorial building! free booze! head on over, everybody!) i'm sure there are more who aren't total homos.

its not just ucsc, other schools around the country notorious for their stoner crowds have had to fight stricter implementations of control on 4-20. i dont know if its that student bodies are getting more "in your face" about the illegal activity, or if there is something coming from the government saying "we need to reevaluate where our monies go. hence we are going to try and cut funding to whatever schools aren't complying with our rules."

as someone who sits on a senate of a college with a large 420 friendly history i have to say its ironic that our students continually protest security for "parenting" them when it comes to alcohol and other substance control issues during events and parties on campus, yet they protest when the school states that it does not want to "parentally protect" them from the local cops who would gladly enforce federal drug laws.

I gotta say. I went to UCSC for 4 years, and as a non-stoner 4/20 was pretty awful. Drum circles everywhere. Some Sasquatch looking woods-dweller stole all the soap in the dorm bathroom and threw it away - including my soap. The overwhelming wet sock reek of kind buds. Stoned ultimate Frisbee players running into plate glass windows like sickly bats. While this wasn't so different from much of the year, 4/20 just rubbed it in.

Lastly, UCSC has a chronic fear of:

1) It's image as a hippie school - has this gotten worse of late, I think so.
2) A revival of the 80's 'End of the World Party' at Porter, which apparently started out nice, but got way outta hand and soon became like Castro Halloween - a violent crazy bridge and tunnel nightmare.

Perhaps the same has happened with UCSC's 4/20 celebration, bus loads of wild-eyed goons and such looking for fights and free weed?

Frankly awesome for UCSC, pot is not a sacrament - now Whiskey is a sacrament, but I digress.

Well...for what it's worth - check this video and we can give UCSC a big FAIL for trying to stop 4/20:
