SFist Watches: Your Locals On Reality TV

Let's check in on local girl Marvita, and her quest to become "America's Next Top Model." After arriving in New York, the girls moved into their loft, which, while nice, wasn't exactly posh, what with the bunk beds in one room, and one giant bed in another. Regardless, it was a step up for Marvita, who talked about being homeless, without parents, at the age of 18. Also in the loft: No smoking! And an inspirational quote from Cycle 1 model Robin!?

Their first challenge was a runway show in the middle of Times Square, and Marvita was the first girl down the catwalk. Alas, she kept her head down for most of it, and Miss J. was not pleased. Fatima also accidentally slapped Marvita in the face, and Marvita was not pleased, to say the least. Later Fatima told Marvita she has a squished-up face. We have sympathy for Fatima and all, but man. She really has some bad manners. Marvita finally told her she just needs to drop her guard and try to be nice. We'll see if the advice sticks.

Paulina Porizkova also made her appearance as the new judge, replacing Twiggy. She began her stint by critiquing all the girls one by one, calling out one for bad skin, and another for looking like a transvestite version of Robin Wright Penn, which was so on the money, it's scary. LOVE HER! She told Marvita to never bite on her back teeth when being photographed, lest her face look like a square. After that lesson they all went to their first photo shoot, which had something to do with homelessness, and high fashion looking like street clothes, and inspiration, and we don't know. The set-up hit home for both Marvita and Fatima, though, as they have both spent times living on the streets.

Judging! They liked Marvita's photo, but, again, said her walk was atrocious. Things went on, but when Kim came up for judging last, she admitted that, like, she just wasn't into the, like, whole fashion thing, and like, it just didn't interest her. So Tyra asked her if she wanted to go home. And she said yes. And she left. Which is fine by us. She kinda looked like she had been punched in the face so hard that her features were permanently indented into her skull. What? Too mean? Well at least we didn't say she looks like a wadded up tissue, as Miss J. did. But whatever. She's a QUITTER! Regardless of that, someone was still going to be eliminated, which was just mean. Luckily, the girl not still in the running towards becoming America's Next Top Model was not Marvita, but Atalya. Next week: Makeovers!

On "Project Runway" we had the traditional Tim-visits-the-designers-at-home episode, with a twist. Rami and Chris had to present three pieces from their collection, and one of them would move on to the final three.

chriscrown.jpgAs far as the visits home, we learned that Jillian has a supportive boyfriend and family, Rami was born in Jerusalem and has a HUGE studio in Los Angeles, Chris March is friends with someone who loves, LOVES Rococo decoration, and Christian has no friends or family. Or at least none that like him enough to support him on camera. Seriously. Everyone else trotted out loved ones to parade in front of the Tim, but all we learned about Christian is that he sleeps on the floor of his teeny, tiny studio, and he used to work in a hair salon. Neither of which was the least bit surprising.

But let's focus on the the dueling designers. Rami "Sometimes I Feel Like a Nut" Kashou's line was inspired by Joan of Ark. Needless to say there was some draping involved, and Tim criticised many of the garments' "hammered and nailed" look, I guess meaning there wasn't a lot of softness there. He also thought one of the pieces weighed about as much as a piece of chainmail.

Chris March spoke about not wanting to march a costume parade down the runway, but he also wanted to stay true to his aesthetic. Showing his pieces to Tim he dropped the bomb that he had used human hair as trim on many of the designs. This news caused Tim to gag a little bit, and granted, it's a...provocative material to use. But it's not like he went around to salons and swept up hair from the floors. He used hair that's used for hair extensions. And is that really any more disgusting than using animal fur? Anyway, Tim suggested cutting some of the hair, as it were, but Chris insisted he would keep at least some of it.

Runway! Rami's three pieces were first. The first design was a teal coat that was very poofy. The second was a black and white draped dress. And the third was a black gown that was quite stunning, but had these two round pieces on the sides that were just awful. Why would anyone want to wear a dress that adds unnecessary inches to the hips?

hairshirt.jpgChris was next. The first look was a tailored design of a black jacket (with hair trim) and a black skirt that includes an overlay made with safety pins. The second design was a dress with a lace top, and a hair skirt. The final piece was a slinky black velvet dress with some crocheted lace work that's kind of hard to explain. You can some murky images from the runway here.

The judges gave props to Chris "thinking outside of the box," and thought his craftsmanship and creativity were good. But they thought the hair was "creepy" and that the girls looked a little "overly designed." As for Rami they appreciated that he took their advice and went for a more constructed look on some of the designs. Nina loved the drapey dress, but thought the coat was way too bulky. Michael Kors hated the round things on the sides of the evening gown.

So. It came as no surprise, really, that the judges ultimately chose Rami. He's a much safer designer, and some might say, more talented. Chris March's aesthetic is definitely out there, but we also found it a lot more fun. Regardless, the loss for Chris really wasn't that much of a loss, as he was able to show his complete line at Fashion Week anyway, and really, what has the first place prize gotten any of the winners in the past? Not a whole hell of a lot.

You can see Chris's complete Fashion Week online here, as well as all the other designers, so be warned for spoilers. And look for the former "America's Next Top Model" contestants modeling some of the designs!

Even though Chris is gone, we'll still cover the finale in next week's post, because we're that way. See you then!
