Willie's Book Tour for Basic Brown: My Life and Our Times

Do you have your copy yet? One noteworthy review of Basic Brown notes the following:
He makes an unusual attack on his successor as mayor of San Francisco, Gavin Newsom, all but accusing him of racism in appointments. "When I was mayor of San Francisco I made a point to appoint as many qualified blacks as I could to city posts. Now when I walk around city hall, I see almost no black faces. When I left, blacks were ousted along with me."
What do you think of that? Other reviews are here and here.
If you'd prefer, there's always the detailed Willie Brown biography from 1996 as an option. Read the whole thing online, if you want.

Willie Brown has always reminded me of Clarence Royce, the fictional mayor of Baltimore on "The Wire". He's firmly a part of the political establishment, exploiting it to enrich himself but when defending against charges of corruption he portrays his political career as representative of the ascendant power of the African-American community in general and therefore any challenger to his wealthy position as someone opposed to black empowerment.
Big Willie is a pimp...my granny loved him!
The guy getting the book signed got photographed with an ear tumor. What a tool.
But seriously Willie, black is so 1960's. Black people make up just 7% of our population. How many black faces are you hoping to see?
what a bastard...
but he's our s.o.b.
loved the guy but threw us under the bus during the dot-com boom....
respect but stay north of mission mssr.

I thought race is not supposed to matter. If he made it a specific point to appoint as many blacks as he could, then he too can be accused of having an agenda and discriminate based on race, no?
