More, More, More: Milk's Castro in the '70s

Seeing as how castroshopper's Ray F. has some choice shots of the Castro's conversion to 1978, we thought we'd thrill you with a few more recent images of the world's most flowery neighborhood.

Also, it seems to have gone through a big transformation -- bigger than we thought, in fact -- but many of the stores that are there today seem faithful to the stores' genres of yesteryear, at least according to Van Sant's version of it. Take a look! (And remember, you can still sign-up for the candle-light march re-enactments. Go here for more details.)

Is the scaffolding part of the set? Please advise.

clobba.jpg
Current (though gaudy) club gear boutique Clobba was The Valet, which has the most darling bell-bottom logo.

Hot Cookie
was Double Rainbow ice cream shop.

Marcello's was, interesting enough, Marcello's.(They had pizza back in the '70s? That's crazy.)

At 18th and Castro, we can't imagine a bar like this, due to us psychedelic sign, being allowed to operate today.

Again, for more amazing shots, check out castroshopper. Now.

the scaffolding is on the castro theater to enable a team of neon artists to repair the sign's neon.

The Aquarius Records storefront has a concert poster for 'Tubgirl Unplugged' in the window.

Awesome.

"Tubgirl Unplugged"

Talk about redundant.

... we used to call that bar "Terd Hole"

Marcello's was not there until the late 70's. There was a bakery at 420 Castro Street, called Georgeanna's. I used to display my photographs in their window. It was a
popular muni-transfer stop.I would like to recommend a website dedicated to the evolution of the Castro... not a recreation like the movie... but actual images and stories
by pioneers in the early S.F. gay right movement:
