SFist Finds: Vintage Muni Transfer

muni-transfer.jpgSFist reader/commenter Tendernob kindly sent this find our way:

I spent the holidays with my mother in Los Angeles, who collects rare first-edition books. While I was visiting, she opened "The Complete Sherlock Holmes" (circa 1930) and an old San Francisco MUNI transfer fell out. We don't know whose it was, or how long it was in that book. We're not even certain how old this ticket is, but google tells us that John M. Woods was general manager of MUNI in 1972, so it's probably from that era.

Reading a rare, first-edition copy of Sherlock Holmes on the bus sounds like a very San Francisco thing to do -- no matter what decade.

Submit your Bay Area finds to found [at] sfist [dot] com, or tag them sfist and found on Flickr! Let us know where/when you found the item and any other helpful info.

Very cool indeed!

A whole passel of similar (and much older) items are on display at the San Francisco Railway Museum near the Ferry Building ...

Hey! Hey! April 4th is my birthday! I was probably doing a big birthday poop in my pants at the very moment this transfer was being issued. Wicked!

The bus probably still hasn't come yet.

I like the text on the back:

THANK YOU - WE APPRECIATE THE PRIVILEGE OF SERVING YOU

Now replaced with something like:

THE BUYING AND SELLING OF TRANSFERS WILL RESULT IN YOUR ARREST!

Here's what I think:

That bloke who played Tommy In Trainspotting and is now in that new show that I can't remember the name of (where he time travels in SF). He put that in the book last week, or something.

Why would anyone save a 24 transfer?

Now, a 21 transfer, I would understand!

(any statute of limitations on collecting on a 21 transfer?)

Very interesting find!

Thanks for posting my find, Leanne! Not as exciting as a tiger mauling, but hey.

I was flipping through some John Barth books at Community Thrift on Valencia and out fell two of these MUNI transfers! Should I feel guilty for pocketing the transfers and not buying the book? I mean, they were expired after all.

Thanks for three hearty laughs at the expense of our beloved Muni fizzandpop, grumpyduck and aj. You guys/gals are hilarious.

THANK YOU - WE APPRECIATE THE PRIVILEGE OF SERVING YOU HAHAHA! I think I'd die of shock if a MUNI worker said that to me! Thanks SFist for this and thanks grumpyduck for making me laugh on a Monday no less!

that is awesome!
