Hey, residents of Inner-Richmond/USF/Upper-Haight. Did you just hear an explosion shortly before midnight? What the hell was that? Our theory: an exploding tiger.

I heard it (8th and Balboa) - sounded pretty big. No idea what it was, though.
I heard it (6th & California).
Seriously, what the hell was that? I heard it at 6th and Cabrillo.
I heard it all the way out at 22nd Ave!
I heard it all the way over at UCSF....no word in the esteemed mainstream press, so far as I can tell....god does this mean I have t actually read a whole Chronicle to find out....
Was it a meth lab exploding?
It was incredibly loud at Clayton/Waller!!
It was incredibly loud at Clayton/Waller!!
And it echoed too, apparently.
It is getting close to New Years, and all the aging militants in the city need to dispose of their ordinance somehow.
I went to a New Years Eve party in East San Jose once. My God, the gunfire was amazing, I thought I was back in 'Nam, even though I never went there. The next morning my host went down to his small plane at Reid Hillview, and a fallback bullet had punched a hole in the top of the wing, straight down.
I heard it on the Baker Bch side of the Presidio. Sounded like the munitions runs I used to hear when living near a military base.
Whole room lit up with a bright flash, then about 2s later heard the boom, putting the explosion about 1/2 mile away from us (next to UCSF-Parnassus).
A few weeks ago I saw/heard something similar and then power was out in a few-block radius on west slope of Cole Valley (It came back on after a few hours). So it could have been a transformer blowing up in both cases... Anyone lose power last night?
It's those damn Sunis again.
I used to live on 31st/Clement, and the transformer right outside my bedroom window blew up twice. So yes, the explosion was the transformer shorting out.
yep we heard it at hayes/cole big time. friend at SFPD said they had people investigating for several hours but were "UTL" (unable to locate) any source of the explosion. No transformers reported out by pge. 911 got dozens, if not scores, of calls.
You still have to take off your freaking shoes at the airport, but someone can detonate a powerful shell over a major metropolitan city with impunity. Someone out there is doing a 'heckuva job.'
