New Tunes Tuesday #10

Each Tuesday we will feature new music that should (or whatever) be on your radar.

Standouts: (There are no major standouts this week)

Please Let Us Know What You Think About:

1. Amy Winehouse - Frank: Winehouse doesn't have much luck - her last single, "Rehab," was so deliciously repetitive that it apparently drove her into exhaustion rehab. Will her next single be "Fuck Me Pumps" or "Amy Amy Amy"? We hope that nothing gets as overplayed as "Rehab" was.

2. Enchanted - Soundtrack: We are thinking that the only song on this album that's worth listening to is Jon McLaughlin's "So Close." We've seen him twice in concert and each time he's been nothing but stellar. We think we'll just download that one song.

3. U2 - Joshua Tree (Remastered): Nothing much that we can add to this, except if you don't own this masterfully crafted 80's album, then go buy the remastered version. For old and new fans alike, U2 re-releases one of our favorite albums. Ever.

4. Six Organs of Admittance - Shelter from the Ash: iTunes classifies Six Organs of Admittance as "freak folk." You laugh, but it's true. We have to agree with them on that. It seems that you have to be in the right mood to venture into the mind of Ben Chasney. Check out their free show at Amoeba in Berkeley on Thursday, December 6th. (Listen to: "Jade Like Wine.")

Upcoming Holiday Music:
colbie.jpg1. Colbie Caillat - Mistletoe (single): If you are fan of "new" Christmas music, then check this one out. Though there doesn't really seem to sound like a Christmas song (though they did add a faint jingle bell in the background), Calliat sings about Christmas. She sings, "It's not Christmas if the snow don't fall/I'm still standing here three feet small/Lose our troubles because after all/It's Christmas time." (She really sings "don't" instead of "doesn't" fall. Yeah, we know it fits better in the rhyme scheme but come on - don't?) It's a nice song, but doesn't evoke the visions of sugar plum fairies or presents under the tree.

Guilty Pleasure for the Week:

1. Jordin Sparks - Jordin Sparks: Music pleasure? No. Curiosity? Yes. We are definitely curious to see if the latest American Idol can actually sell CD's, concert tickets and continue a career after her four months of fame earlier this year. We think that another season two fiasco is upon us (meaning that the #2 will be more famous than the #1 - Clay Aiken vs. Ruben Studdard). With the recent semi-demise of Kelly Clarkson and yet another (lovely?) country album by Carrie Underwood (bleh!), we wonder about how many seasons do we have to endure of this ridiculous search for the next pop star. We are disenchanted by it all.
