Oil Spill Damage Is, Well, Damaging

Oh man, are you kidding? This is terrible. Not to get all tugging-the-heart strings today, but this spill is much worse than initially reported yesterday. This oil covered bird above was found at Fort Baker cove in Sausalito today. It seems that the Marin Headlands are getting crazy sloshed with oil on their shores. (The aerial shots of the spill on SFGate are jaw-dropping.)

A Golden Gate National Recreation Area ranger claims that the entire area is covered in oil, "you can smell it. This whole area is closed."

So, two things: one, residents who find birds covered with oil should call 877-823-6926. And two, are there any clean-up efforts going on that we should know about? Like, know about right now? Some readers have asked and we'd love to give you more info. We'll snoop around and try uncovering scheduled efforts, but if any of you have scheduled info on volunteering clean-up, let us know. Please.

there's a coast guard cutter cruising back and forth between the bay bridge abutment and the anchored tanker out in the bay, almost like they are treating it like a crime scene, which is the only positive thing i can think of right now.

this is so fucking lame!

I just left this below:

Check out the UC Davis Oiled Wildlife Care Network site periodically over the next few days. They don't need volunteers right now, but it could change.

There's also Marine Mammal in Sausalito.

According to Channel 4, some progress is being made:

But a little goes a long way. Spill diesel fuel in water, and just a few drops will make a sheen a couple hundred feet in diameter.

would it be too much to require container ships to have double hulls like the oil tankers do?

channel 2 just said 3 birds have been found dead and 3 rescued up near tiburon

Hey Brock, I just found these great links to how to get involved. Like Leanne said they dont appear to be taking volunteers right now, but I suspect that this is just becaue they are working on containment of the oil first before a major animal resuce opperation is organized. Check out these links though...

How until the lefties start organizing to have shipping traffic banned from the Golden Gate?

Good idea ChinaNob.

Too much lead and GHB coming in from China anyway.

can we also start a sweater project like the Penguin Jumpers Project?
the wool absorbs the oil while keeping the bird warm.
