The typically chatty Gavin Newsom spoke for less than 15 minutes last night, declaring a mayoral victory at last night's party at the Ferry Building. He stood alongside his father and gal-pal Jennifer Siebel (who presumably had to be talked out performing a stirring act-II-opening rendition of "Don't Cry for Me, Argentina," which, really, would have been rad.)
According to the Chronicle he said, "To my critics, this is an opportunity, and in some ways a reconciliation...I commit to working with you for the next four years, and I commit to resolving those areas where you still believe we can do better."
Sounds good to us. Also, when the polls closed, just over 48,000 of the ballots had been counted, and 77 percent of them went to Newsom. That....is a lot. But when the ballots are all counted five or eight years from now, we'll see what the actual tally is.
More on last night's election later.

Look -- he has a wire running up his back like George Bush did during that debate a few years ago!
Is Newsom a robot? Who is telling him what to do?
Wow-great hairdo. Is he going to DiFi's stylist?
The color seems lighter too...

"Reconcile with critics" and "focus on the environment". Thats horseshit.
If either of these were true, Gavin Newsom would have helped win prop A and fight prop H. With $2 million in the bank, no opposition, and more political capital than any modern mayor.... he still didnt lift one finger because he didnt want to piss off Republcan Billionaire Don Fisher. Newsom did not attend one fundraiser or spend one hour helping the Sierra Club, Bike Coalition and SEIU win these important measures.
Hope you enjoyed four years of greenwashing from Mayor Photo-op, because Gavin Newsom is more lost in his world of spin than he has ever been.
Last night it appeared that Jennifer Siebel and Willie Brown’s arm candy use the same bottle of bleach. However, Jennifer Siebel did look a little classier and appeared to have eaten more recently.
I agree entirely with Ted S. Newsom is the most do-nothing mayor, I can't believe he ran unopposed.
He does nothing, he stands for nothing! What is wrong with people that they would re-elect such a useless pinhead?
Considering he ran unopposed, he'd better damn well have gotten 75%+ of the vote. Another way to look at it, is that a motley, ridiculous crew of candidates which actually included a candidate with the name CHICEKN JOHN, somehow managed to corall a quarter of the vote. Not a single significant or even partially significant candidate ran against him and that band of nobodies still took a quarter.
So 25% of the voters - with basically no prodding - voted "Anybody But Newsom". Makes one wonder how a progressive centrist like Peskin would have done if he entered the race and ran a real campaign.
Newsom has never wanted to be mayor of SF. What he's wanted was a steppingstone to being Governor or U.S. Senator. Ditto for Kamala Harris who doesn't want to be D.A., but Mayor or State Attorney General.
That is a truly excellent photo.
Gird your loins ... the low voter turnout for the Mayor's race means an even lower hurdle for signatures to get all sorts of measures on ballots for the next 4 years .... yikes.
How did Quintin do?
