SoCal Ablaze
Whether you like it or not, SoCal is a part of us. So, this one is going out to our lower half: stay safe, San Diego and SoCal.
Fueled by disgusting, freakishly warm Santa Ana winds, coastal and inland areas are on fire. La Gov declared a state of emergency last night for San Diego and seven surrounding counties. Work and school has been canceled; people evacuated. Ugh.
In a rare state of concern, we rushed to call our Hillcrest-based sister in San Diego. "Oh yeah, it sucks. But now I have work off today, so I might go to the beach," she reported back to us. (God, sometimes we fucking love you, SoCal folk!) It's nice to know that they're keeping their chins up, tanned.
Read more about it here and here.

Our disasters zones are better.
Just in case you thought you had heard it all today.
"I think there is a handful of people who hate America. Unfortunately for them, a lot of them are losing their homes in a forest fire today".
-- Glenn Beck, The Glenn Beck Program
(
It's a shame for anyone to lose their home, but it is more of a shame for a firefighter to lose his life trying to protect a home built in one of these tinderbox canyons. When will these people abandon their fantasies of wilderness?
Jesus Christ, did he really say that?
Well, I'd hate America too if it burned my house down.
Here's the transcript & audio clip of what Glenn Beck said. Too bad the decent point Beck is attempting to make gets nuked by that one stupid comment.
It's doesn't seem as offensive as the "Nappy Headed Ho" comment from Don Imus, but people who disagree with Beck will be calling in by the dozens for him to be fired.
Oh, about the fire, I feel bad for the people losing their property. Seems like there ought to be some way to protect a house from being so flammable (i.e. fire retardant or foam sprayed over the roof before a fire blows through?).
Send more goats to SoCal .... fire prevention technology at its best.
Reminds me of the movie "Independence Day", where the aliens invade NYC, DC, and LA, and the Angelenos are the only ones too blissed out to recognize the aliens as a threat.
Malcove, just read the complete transcript,(thanks for the link), but it is still an assanine quote. The guy is a complete idiot.
is it a part of us because we are a compassionate, open-minded city? or is it a part of us because 99.9% of the people who live in this city are from Southern California?
i'm still trying to figure this out.
personally, i don't feel sorry for these people at all. they shouldn't be living there in the first place. we, as San Franciscans should be appaled that they've been allowed to displace any one of the millions of animals that lived in these canyons before.
come on people, if we're not part of the solution, we're part of the problem.
Yes, let's not take Glenn Beck's quote out of context ...
... wouldn't want to be accused of cherry-picking -- he's making a decent point ...
... and he's such an otherwise reasonable man who enriches the public discourse ...
Why the hell hasn't anyone organized a decent boycott and gotten some sponsors yanked from his shitty-ass show?
Yeah, yeah. Maybe it's God wreaking vengeance on those america-haters.
And the religious fanatic hicks in the trailer parks lose everything to a tornado in the red states because they don't pray to Jebus hard enough.
Oh wait, no one's ever said that before.
