Mini-View with Charlie M. from the Happy Hollows

spaceland6.jpg
In the midst of getting ready for tonight’s show at the Fillmore Charlie M., bass player for the Happy Hollows answered a few quick questions for SFist. Tonight’s show will be great. The Happy Hollows are playing with the Silversun Pickups and Midnight Movies. The show is sold out, but craigs has got some for sale. The Happy Hollows just finished recording their first full legnth release- so watch for it soon. You can check out a few songs on their myspace page.

Do you have any Bay Area ties?
Yes, our singer Sarah is from here. And she went to SF State. Actually, none of us are from LA. Chris and I are from DC.

What’s your favorite song to perform live?
Sarah wrote a new one, it’s kind of like our Bohemian Rhapsody. It sounds nothing like that, but it’s a complicated arrangement. She does some Eddie Van Halen style finger tapping. It’s an anti-war song called “Lieutenant Owl”.

Where are the best fans at?
We get a good response in LA, but they aren’t the best fans. Portland, Oregon. The crowds there aren’t scenesters. They are hard core music fans. They know a lot more about bands than we do. They’re definitely the most knowledgeable fans. If you can make it there, you can make it anywhere. It’s like the DC of the west coast.

Lamest request from a crowd?
We get asked to do Pixie covers, only we don’t do any covers at all. We sound a teensy bit like the Pixies, which is where that comes from. Also, people sometimes ask why Sarah isn’t rolling around on her back playing more.

Any Burrito tips in SF?
I haven’t had a ton of good burritos here. The Mexican food in LA is great--- can you recommend any places here?

hmmm. "if you can make it there, you can make it anywhere." fairly sure that song's about new york, which would make portland the -new york- of the west coast. where'd he get DC from??

okay wait, i think i get it. DC is full of people who are really into music, like portland. he probably wasn't quoting the song...
