New Tunes Tuesday #3

Each Tuesday we will feature new music that should (or whatever) be on your radar.

Standouts:

1. Dashboard Confessional - The Shade of Poison Trees:
Acoustic is back. Chris Carrabba returns to his "roots" with the new release of The Shade of Poison Trees. Basically if you are a long-time Dashboard Confessional fan, then you already know all about this album and probably have already pre-ordered it. As a newer fan of Dashboard Confessional we miss the added energy that we heard in Dusk and Summer but we love the fact that the energy is replaced with a sincerity and intimacy that is not heard in their last CD. The intimate setting of Dashboard Confessional's fifth album allows the listener to feel that they are actually listening to Carrabba live, something that we will be able to do later this month at the Warfield. It really lands on the fact that Carrabba continues to write well-written lyrics and catchy melodies that people can relate to. He's done it for nine years; we have a feeling he'll continue for another nine - he's just that good.

2. Marjorie de Muynck - In The Key of Earth:
Within four epic musical movements named: Pulse, Light, Ancient Aquifer and Breath, Marjorie de Muynck explores the very essence of sound. She finds a very deep connection to our planet that so many are desperately trying to find. Through overtones and harmonics, de Muynck creates a cacophony of sounds that creates a bridge between sound and music. "In the Key of Earth" is not intended to "disembody" but rather to "ground and relax the listener through resonance with the Earth using Ohm, a scientifically based and spiritually upheld sound healing frequency." There is something deeply spiritual when reconnecting ourselves to the Earth, something that de Muynck allows us to do with each listen.

Please Let Us Know About:
1. P.J. Harvey- White Chalk: Everyone is talking about this album, so we definitely thought we should mention it.

2. The Spill Canvas - No Really, I'm Fine: Is playing Slim's on 10/14 - seems to be a solid 4th album.

3. Trolleyvox - Your Secret Safe/Luzerne: Their new single, "Stomping Grounds" features the beautiful voice of Beth Filla. This Philadelphia-based band plans an acoustic West Coast tour later this year.

4. Ryan Bingham - Mescalito:Though only 25, Bingham's whiskey-soaked voice carries an edge that today's country music completely ignores. Bingham has brought the country back into country music.

5. Division Day - Beartrap Island: Touted as one of the year's best, Division Day (featured above) started in Santa Cruz and has released a cover song each week for the last five weeks to celebrate the release of their first album. (My favorite cover was "Enjoy the Silence.")

Past Hits You Shouldn't Forget:
perishers.jpg1. The Perishers - Victorious: Let There Be Morning, The Perishers' second album, was one of my favorites from 2003. We've been waiting for their next album for years and it unfortunately slipped through the cracks and was released earlier this month.

Guilty Pleasure for the Week:

We have the new Macarena for 2007 - it's called Soulja Boy. Start learning the dance moves now because they are a little more complicated than the Macarena. Apparently there are several cover versions already: “Crank Dat (SpiderPig)” pays tribute to “The Simpsons Movie”; “Crank Dat Soulja Boy” (Chipmunks remix) - you get the point. (Usually when a song gets a cover it's a good thing, but when the covers come out BEFORE the actual CD release - that gets us worried.) Get the office together and start learning those dance moves. Hey, if you video it, put it up on youtube - you'll probably become an overnight sensation.
