Marines Banned From Filming Commercial On SF Streets

marines3.jpg

We stuck it in Day Around The Bay already, but thought we would let you hash it out here in its own pad, readers. It seems that, according to the preciousness that is Dan Noyes, "the Silent Drill Platoon of the U.S. Marine Corps wasn't allowed to be filmed Sept. 11 on California Street in San Francisco for a segment of its new advertising campaign."

Stefanie Coyote, executive director of the San Francisco Film Commission and wife of Peter Coyote, claims that the ban was due to a traffic control issue, not a political one. The U.S. Marines took their pancake makeup and on-screen "it" factor over to the Golden Gate National Recreation Area to film the commercial instead.

I guess that they are so clueless that they think they are welcome her to film propaganda in the city that hates the war so much? To draw in more kids to get killed?

I haven't seen the Bush twins in uniform yet...maybe these people should shoot a commercial aimed at the rich republican kids who never have to fight...

I'm a rich white republican, and i'm joining in May. So fuck you.

Did you read to the end of the USA Today article? The latest update (several hours before this was posted here) has information vindicating the Film Commission, including a statement from the director that there was no singling out whatsoever. A full permit was issued for Saturday the 9th, but for whatever reason the Marines weren't going to make it until the 11th, and the director wasn't able to make a request for another permit on time.

The director's comments also seem to directly contradict the allegations that the crew was allowed to film the 11th, only without the Marines; the background shooting was done on the 9th, in keeping with the existing permit, and all shooting on the 11th was on GGNRA land.

maricosoy: my not-so-rich republican family has sent two boys over to iraq already. i suppose you only support the troops who agree with you.

Traffic, since when does SF care about TRAFFIC Issues? Thats a nice lie Ms Coyote!

San Francisco Hates the Military and anything to too with it, so its just natural that one would think that Ms Coyotoe would ban a military shoot, hell the nut jobs in cityhall are trying to ban the Blue Angles.

Did guest 5,6 even read the USA today article. This is a non-issue. It has more to do with permits than a vast left wing conspiracy in the SF government. Sure Chris Daly doesn't want the Blue Angels but he lost that battle. Honestly he does have some valid arguments. I don't agree with him on this issue though. Back to point, I doubt Chris Daly has much power over Ms Coyote's department. Read what pantsgolem posted. He correctly summarizes the USA today article.

BTW- guest[5] - The city does care about traffic issues. The debate over traffic in GG Park is one example.

guest[4]- I thank your family for your service to the country. But I think you are misinterpreting the comment. mariconsoy is talking about class and war. He is saying that the people who profiting from this war don't have much at stake besides money. While on the other hand "not-so-rich" Republicans, Democrats, independents are taking the brunt of the damage from the GWOT.

It's insane to suggest the city should be able to ban the Marines from filming here just because a disproportionate # of San Franciscans are against the war (even though that didn't actually seem to happen here as guest #7 says).

Sure, you may like that idea because you're anti-war. But what about the precedent that sets? What if the next cause the city rules against for political reasons, is one you support?

Guest #8, please keep your exceptional attitude in mind when a product you don't like (or are embarassed by) forcibly features you in their commercial for the whole world to see. I hope it's for Depends.

Kay: You are not featured in the commercial. San Fransisco is featured in the commercial and last time I checked, it is still part of the United States (unfortunately). San Francisco is becoming such a leftiist propaganda city that will hypocritically dance between issues based on principles it "claims" to support. Just because you may not agree with this war doesn't give a city the RIGHT to completely disallow even an opportunity for others in that area who might want to serve this country. It is backwards and I am pleased that the rest of the country (welcome back to the United States) is starting to realize the horrendous hypricrisy that floats over the great city of San Fransisco.

Very few people across America were surprised that SF didn't allow the Marines to Film their commercial.

So you don't like the military? I have an idea, try defending yourself in the future. We can let the rest of the world know that SF is up for grabs. Beleive me, most of us wouldn't lift a finger to go to your defense.
